Job description

At Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation (‘AKKF’) our purpose is to empower young people to thrive beyond the impacts of family mental illness. We achieve this by:

  • delivering positive mental health outcomes through high quality services that are trauma informed and evidence based;
  • delivering services that uniquely integrate recreation with mental health education, on the kids turf and on the kids terms; and
  • driving thought leadership and best practice in mental health through research and advocacy for young people and their families across Australia.

Our opportunity 

If you enjoy working with young people in this sector, then this role is for you. Reporting to the Program Lead, this casual role based in Darwin is responsible for supporting the staff and volunteers in the delivery of allocated programs to our young people and families. 

Your responsibilities include:  

  • Support and assist the Program Lead with the facilitation and delivery of allocated AKKF programs, including but not limited to Camps and Activity Days. 
  • Support the Program Lead with coordinating young people and volunteers on program.  
  • Adhere to AKKF policies, procedures and workplace health and safety requirements whilst on program. 
  • Coordinate the safe transfer of young people from the program pick up point to the program drop off point. 
  • Coordinate the meet and greet for families and young people for the organised transport. 
  • Coordinate the signing the young people on/off the role at the pick-up/drop off point. 
  • Coordinate the collection of medication in the approved form from the young person/guardian. 
  • Complete documentation and administration as required by AKKF, within agreed timeframes and standards 
  • Regularly participate in programs (face-to-face and online). 
  • Participate in AKKF events as requested. 

About you 

To be successful in this role you will ideally have:  

  • Demonstrated experience in a similar position, delivering recreational programs. 
  • The ability to engage and support groups of young people aged between 8-18 (as a guide up to 24 per program). 
  • The ability to work as part of a team and autonomously. 
  • Have a can-do, adaptable, resilient, positive, proactive attitude and approach. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Full driver's license and access to own car. 
  • Organisational and time management skills. 
  • Strong communication skills (including written and oral).  
  • High standard of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion. 
  • Maintain a current satisfactory check for working with young people, as per the relevant State/Territory legislation. 

Desirable

  • Experience in the Mental Health sector. 
  • Certificate III in Community Services, 
  • Nationally Accredited First Aid Certificate, 
  • Experience in the Not-for-Profit sector.

AKKF programs 

Our programs are held off-site, in various locations across all mainland states of Australia, meeting the need where our young people are located. As programs operate outside usual business hours, your ability to work outside usual business hours is essential to your success in this role. Our camps run from Friday to Sunday including overnight, our Activity Days and virtual offering run afternoons, evenings and weekends, school holidays and occasionally during the day.
