Who are we?

We’re here to help people live well and create a better and more sustainable future. We support healthy and liveable communities by delivering water, sewerage and recycled water services to 1.77 million people who rely on us every day and every night. At South East Water, we innovate with purpose and act with care to deliver healthy water for life. Fresh thinking and collaboration are at the heart of our organisation. We are constantly learning, embracing the challenges of today and excited by the opportunities that tomorrow will bring.

The role

This is a newly developed role within our Environmental Approvals team, designed to provide cultural heritage and post-contact heritage approvals advice for South East Water’s capital projects. The Project Archaeologist reports directly to the Team Leader, Environmental Approvals, and will build and maintain constructive working relationships with relevant regulatory authorities and work across the capital program to achieve the following activities:

  • Cultural heritage due diligence assessments
  • Identifying approvals triggers and requirements
  • Identifying opportunities to avoid and minimise impacts to heritage
  • Contributing to and overseeing Cultural Heritage Management Plan preparation and approvals processes
  • Identify, mitigate and monitor heritage risks to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, in collaboration with contractors and internal planners and project managers
Who are you?

A sound understanding and extensive knowledge of cultural heritage legislation, processes and its application will allow you to provide advice and support across the capital program and broader Resilient Communities group, including supporting integrated water management and strategic property projects. You can demonstrate skills, experience or knowledge in the following areas:

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably an Honours degree in Archaeology or Anthropology (or Arts or Science) with an emphasis on Australian Aboriginal archaeology;
  • 7+ years' of practical experience in cultural heritage consulting/advisory services;
  • Ability to contribute to the preparation of cultural heritage reports such as Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs), historical assessments of places, archaeological salvage and due diligence advice;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret Aboriginal cultural heritage management and relevant Victorian and Commonwealth legislation in Victoria;
  • Demonstrated Project Management experience with Cultural Heritage Management Plans with experience conducting Aboriginal cultural values mapping, surveys and/or assessments;
  • Well-developed project management skills with the ability to work within multi-discipline teams and manage multiple projects and priorities within budgets and timeframes;
  • Well-developed interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills (including ability to present, write reports and prepare a range of communications for key stakeholders);
  • Promotion of “cradle to grave” heritage management approach to ensure that risks are identified early, efficiencies are gained, and management plans are properly implemented;
  • Current listing, or can meet the requirements to be listed, as a Heritage Advisor per Aboriginal Victoria guidelines - highly regarded;
  • Experience working with Registered Aboriginal Parties - desirable.
What's in it for you?

We're about finding the right person for the right opportunity and want to support you to work at your best, whatever that looks like - flexibly, part-time, compressed.

Along with an array of truly flexible working arrangements, you can expect to enjoy the following benefits of working at South East Water:

  • A commitment to work-life balance, including hybrid working and leave purchasing.
  • 15 weeks paid parental leave for all parents and paid super on unpaid parental leave.
  • Modern office facilities with panoramic beachfront views with free on-site parking.
  • A great culture working in collaborative teams with strong work ethics, with career focused learning and development opportunities.
  • The opportunity to be part of an organisation committed to environmental initiatives.
We're for everyone

We do meaningful work, but how we do it is just as important. We’re here to help people live well, protect the environment, and keep healthy water and resources accessible and affordable for all.  We know to make a positive difference we need to support our people to be their very best. Flexibility and innovation are at the heart of how we work.  But it’s our people’s collective ambition, authenticity and differences that bring our culture to life.

Our people are as diverse as the communities we serve. Everyone brings a unique voice and a refreshing perspective that keeps us innovating. It makes us better learners, thinkers and collaborators, helping create better outcomes for our customers. Even though we’re all different, we still share a common goal to deliver healthy water for life.

We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, members of the LGBTIQ+ community, people with disability and from culturally diverse backgrounds. We aim to provide an inclusive and accessible workplace for everyone. If you need any help with the application process or would like to discuss your reasonable adjustments during interviews, or to learn more about the role, please contact: *******@southeastwater.com.au
