About the Department & Division

The Department of Health has a diverse set of responsibilities, and a common purpose of providing highly effective health system leadership. The Department is responsible for the overall strategic leadership and direction of the public health system in Queensland. Queensland's hospital system is facing greater demand and pressure than ever before. This is driven by our growing and ageing population, and compounded by pressures on primary, aged and disability care. To help address this, the Health Capital Division (HCD), in partnership with Hospital and Health Services (HHS), is leading the biggest hospital expansion program Queensland has ever seen.

The program includes building three new hospitals, expanding 11, upgrading rural and regional health facilities and delivering thousands of new hospital beds over the next five years. In addition, the intent is for this to be the first tranche of a 15-year program of infrastructure investments.

About the Role

Health Capital Division is dedicated to implementing a County-centred framework for health care, the Project Lead - First Nations Engagement role requires you to work in partnership with Queensland's Health and Hospital Services (HHSs), First Nations stakeholders and HCD project teams to deliver expert, specialist advice. As the Project Lead for First Nations Engagement, your role will be responsible for providing specialist advice to project and leadership teams on cultural considerations for healthcare infrastructure projects, how to engage with local First Nations Stakeholders and Traditional Owners, while ensuring communication materials are culturally safe and appropriate. You will independently manage project deliverables and build trust with the First Nations community by offer high-level strategic advice on cultural considerations in healthcare infrastructure development. You will lead and collaborate on opportunities to involve First Nations stakeholders in project activities and coordinate linkages between HCD activities and the broader Queensland Health First Nations initiatives.

Key Duties

  • Provide specialist advice to project and leadership teams on implementing the Country-centred framework for HCD infrastructure projects, emphasizing First Nations engagement.
  • Lead and support HHSs in engaging local First Nations stakeholders for HCD projects.
  • Independently lead and manage project deliverables.
  • Develop relationships and trust between HCD, HHS's, and the First Nations community.
  • Offer high-level strategic advice on cultural considerations for healthcare infrastructure development.
  • Negotiate and collaborate on culturally appropriate communication materials with relevant teams.
  • Lead and participate in involving First Nations stakeholders in project activities.
  • Coordinate linkages between HCD activities and broader Queensland Health First Nations initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to service quality standards, health, and safety policies.

Mandatory Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • While not mandatory, a relevant qualification in a related field would be well regarded.
  • Relevant experience in a similar role championing the interests of First Nations people.
  • Experience in health, infrastructure or major projects would be well regarded but not essential.
  • Previous experience building and sustaining relationships with First Nations community leaders and stakeholders.
  • You may be required to travel to different locations depending on project and team requirements.
