The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:
- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it,
- protect the Antarctic environment,
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system,
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.
The Capabilities and Facilities Section supports the advancement of Australia's strategic, scientific, environmental and economic interests in the Antarctic by:
- managing the science laboratories, krill aquarium and marine science equipment,
- developing novel scientific instruments and facilities,
- providing technical support to the Australian Antarctic Science program.
The key duties of the position include
The Job
The position will report to the Capabilities and Facilities Manager and will form an integral element of the Aquarium project delivery team. As a Project Manager you will direct the project through its complete lifecycle. Key duties will include, but are not limited to:
- working with stakeholders to develop the scope and requirements documentation,
- working with design consultants to transform the requirements into design documentation,
- liaising with stakeholders to review technical design documentation,
- developing the documentation for the project approval process,
- managing risk and assurance processes for the project,
- developing project management and governance documentation,
- developing and managing project schedules,
- managing the development of project cost plans and budgets,
- liaising with stakeholders and construction managers during the construction phase,
- in consultation with stakeholders, developing and implementing the commissioning plan.
What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
We are seeking applicants with:
- project management experience, including experience in project governance and administration on larger government construction projects,
- experience in the management of design consultants (architects, engineers, biosecurity advisors, quantity surveyors, etc),
- a proven history in the delivery of mechanical services projects through the planning, design and approvals phase,
- demonstrated experience in the successful delivery of multi-discipline projects.
Skills and capabilities
- Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to define and translate complex user requirements into a scope and practical plan to deliver a project.
- Highly-developed communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to produce technical and non-technical reports, briefing papers and other documentation.
- Resilience and adaptability to change and the ability to work independently and effectively in small teams to meet regulatory or project deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to represent the department and the AAD to a wide range of stakeholders while delivering suitable outcomes in complex environments.
- Ability to engage government and science stakeholders and end users.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Project (or equivalent scheduling tool) and electronic document management systems.
Desirable Qualifications
A tertiary qualification from an Australian tertiary institution within a relevant field (i.e. engineering, mechanical services, construction management or project management) or demonstrated equivalent experience.
