ABOUT THE ROLE
The Project Manager is responsible for leading cross functional project teams to construct complex, high quality power supply facilities to deliver business objectives in Australia. The focus will be on low-cost electricity and sustainability for TransAlta and its customers. Depending on project scale, this role could have responsibility for several projects in execution at any point in time.
The Project Manager will lead one or more project teams to ensure all aspects of project planning, commercial, contracts and execution meet the established requirements with respect to cost, schedule, scope, quality, health, safety, and environment. Successful project execution requires planning for the end-state and involves sound front-end planning prior to the commencement of detailed design, procurement, and construction. The Sr. Project Manager will implement a construction driven approach whereby this planning begins early in a project's lifecycle. Subsequent implementation of the plan through execution is key, including vigilant change management. The responsibilities conclude once the project has been successfully turned over to Operations.
This role will be required to work collaboratively with the Engineering and Execution teams to advance TransAlta’s growth strategy for Australia.
POSITION SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities, Areas of Focus

  • Single accountability for planning, executing, orchestrating, and delivering projects within the framework of TransAlta’s strategy including the leadership of large-scale, complex projects often involving multiple internal and external team members, stakeholders, customers, and partners
  • Deliver top performance in all project aspects including Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), cost, contractual, commercial, schedule, functionality, performance, and reliability). In particular, the EHS focus shall include:
  • Achievement of EHS outcomes that meet the requirements of legislation, licenses, permits, TransAlta’s policies and practices and the project's Project Success Goals (PSGs) related to HSE
  • Apply principles of loss management to minimize exposures to incidents and ensure all contractors apply health, safety and environmental programs meeting all legal and project permit requirements
  • Collaborate with and support the Project Development team through the Early and Mature Development Project Stages to gain senior leadership / Board of Directors approval.
  • Establish and document appropriate project execution and contracting strategies
  • Develop project execution plans; lead the development of the project execution budgets; establish and lead project execution teams
  • Collaborate with internal functional group leads such as Supply Chain Management, Business Integration, Legal, etc. to manage cross functional resourcing requirements
  • Ensure appropriate levels of project governance are in place and represent the project in various governance forums (gate reviews, Board of Directors meetings, Steering Committee Meetings, etc.)
  • Support internal audits, and external / Independent Engineering reviews as part of project governance processes, project financing activities, and partner engagement / verification
  • Once projects achieve Final Investment Decision (FID), lead all aspects of project(s) execution through to commissioning and onto commercial operation and business integration
  • Rigorously manage project scope to ensure commitments are achieved safely and within agreed time, cost and quality parameters including the application of a proactive and robust change management program. This includes collaborating with project controls team members to establish cost estimates, schedules, earned value measurement, progress targets etc. required to achieve the cost and schedule commitments
  • Identify and manage project risks
  • Collaborate with other business units to ensure overall objectives are achieved and learnings are shared
  • Drive excellence in team performance including the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives and processes Establish and monitor key performance indicators to improve project operational efficiency
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Certifications and Essential Experience required for the position
  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering, construction or related disciplines, or Trade Qualifications, with project/construction management experience
  • Strong desire to participate in the transformation of the energy industry
  • Minimum 8+ years of project management and construction management experience on large scale energy or resources projects involving process plant and non-process infrastructure
  • Large development and Project Management experience on projects with a totaled cost of $25 million or greater. Representative projects include both greenfield projects as well as brownfield expansions to existing facilities in the heavy industrial or electricity generation sectors.
  • Project Management Professional designation is considered an asset but is not required
  • Experience on wind/solar/storage projects is considered an asset
  • Ability to lead large teams, apply complex designs and manage large project teams to achieve key project outcomes.
  • Skills in MS Project or Primavera, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Proven ability to quickly earn the trust of sponsors and key stakeholders
  • On-site construction management and supervision experience
  • Ability to develop contracting and material supply strategies based on the unique requirements for each project. This includes the generation of scopes of work and specifications associated with material supply orders and construction contracts. In cooperation with the Supply Chain Management team, lead the evaluation, negotiation, award, and management of these items
  • Excellent analytical skills required for timely identification and resolution of variations to plan
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to communicate effectively with all project stakeholders, providing important information to the right parties at the right time
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams while supporting conflicting priorities and deadlines
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in the use of project management methodologies and tools and a drive for continuous improvement
  • Anticipates risks and quickly applies mitigation strategies.
  • Willing to work outside normal work hours.
  • As required, willing to travel to sites throughout Australia.
