Job description

The Role

As a Systems Engineer in the Collins Submarine Program, you will perform an important role in the upgrade of Defence submarine capability, specifically submarine communications system. You will work in a dynamic and diverse environment requiring a number of key skills to undertake the following tasks:

  • Perform complex activities and tasks relating to requirements development, system definition, design and development, integration, verification and validation, testing and working to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Deliver complex Systems Engineering services and products through planning, organisation control and integration.
  • Apply knowledge and experience to undertake objective and systematic analysis to develop complex system engineering products to meet Defence objectives.
  • Implement processes across the Systems Engineering lifecycle using technical and professional knowledge and experience.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and stakeholders to understand their requirements and solve complex issues as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Communicate with stakeholders and line management regarding engineering and technical aspects across the Defence materiel capability lifecycle including preparing briefs, proposals, reports and presentations.
  • Interpret and comply with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks in the preparation and approval of technical submissions, estimates, specifications and documents.
  • Analyse complex Systems Engineering issues using knowledge and experience to identify and recommend solutions.

The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. 

Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. 

It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

Submarines are a unique Defence capability and play an essential role in supporting Australia’s maritime security and your work within the program by engaging Navy and industry partners, will ensure that Navy has an enduring and potent submarine capability for generations to come. 

You will have access to generous and attractive working conditions as an Australian Public Servant in Defence. Defence employees’ working conditions, including an attractive package and a generous superannuation contribution (15.4%) can be sourced from the Defence Enterprise Agreement. 

The Team comprises engineers, project managers, schedulers and logisticians. The APS 6 Systems Engineers reports to an EL 1 Systems Engineer. As a Systems Engineer within the Combat System Program supporting delivery of modernised submarine communications system, you will be part of a supportive and cooperative team working alongside other talented colleagues.

Our Ideal Candidate

You are a qualified Engineer who is diligent, can perform and achieve complex engineering work within an integrated workforce supporting delivery of modernised submarine communications system. You will engage with stakeholders and investigate engineering concepts within a specific engineering discipline including managing specifications and resources in support of the Defence materiel capability lifecycle. You will investigate, analyse and report recommendations and advice to address issues.

The candidate will be able to demonstrate and apply technical knowledge and experience to develop and review design packages, identify risks and uncertainties and consider these in planning, decision-making and priority setting. You will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
