About the Role
This is a maternity leave cover position.
The position covers two roles:
Psychiatrist to the inflammatory bowel disease clinic
Psychiatrist to the functional gut clinic
Psychiatrist to the inflammatory bowel disease clinic
The inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinic Psychiatrist will work alongside our gastroenterologists and IBD nurses to support and improve the care of our patients with IBD. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk of anxiety and depression. Many face chronic symptoms related to their inflammatory disease including abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The need for surgery for some patients is challenging and can be disfiguring. Many of our patients are socioeconomically disadvantaged and do not have access to psychiatric support outside of this clinic. This role is an important and greatly valued one as part of our multidisciplinary service.
Psychiatrist to the functional gut clinic
The Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry Service collaborates with the Gastroenterology Psychological Medicine Unit (GPMU) to provide psychological and psychiatric care to patients with bowel disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease and functional gut disorders. The psychiatrist in the functional gut clinic is a member of the functional gut clinic multidisciplinary team. The core purpose is clinical psychiatric outpatient care, co-located with the functional gut clinic outpatient clinic (presently conducted on Thursday afternoons in the 6th floor Daly Wing clinic area). In addition, the Psychiatrist may supervise a Psychiatry registrar and, from time to time, and does participate in education and research activities within the team. The functional gut service also runs a multi-disciplinary meeting on Tuesday mornings (a clinical case forum for difficult cases). It is desirable that the psychiatrist joins this MDM.
Classifications for this position will range from classification range HN16 - HN56 dependent upon number of years Specialist Experience.
Your Contribution
Medical Graduate and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
Experience in outpatient care of patients with psychiatric illness including anxiety, depression, functional disorders and chronic pain
Expertise and experience in the delivery of clinical psychology/psychiatric services in mental health services
Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain

About the Gastroenterology Department
This is a large department lead by Prof Alex Thompson. We have more than 20 gastroenterologists, a nurse practitioner and many specialised nurses. Our specific interests include the care of people with liver diseases, liver cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and functional gut disorders. We have a large endoscopy service providing the full range of endoscopic services including advanced endoscopic treatments for early gastrointestinal cancer.
