The key duties of the position include
The Role
An opportunity exists for an experienced psychologist to provide treatment and management of Australian Defence Force personnel. The APS 6 Psychologist will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.
They will provide detailed psychological, technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.
The duties of an APS 6 Psychologist occupation in Defence include the following (note: not all duties are required to be performed during a 12 month performance cycle):
1. Perform psychological assessments and provide a range of organisational psychology services and counselling services to ADF members.
2. Prepare and deliver complex psychological reports, presentations and training to meet business outcomes.
3. Research, draft and contribute to Defence Health policies including personnel selection and military employment.
4. Contribute to the delivery of safe and appropriate mental health services and provide evidence-based practice that supports recovery.
5. Facilitate and participate in research collaborations and partnerships with external bodies and clinical programs.
6. Liaise with representatives and other Defence Health and psychology professionals to progress work and meet business objectives.
7. Employ clinical judgement to resolve complex issues and provide advice on situations, taking into account conflicting needs.
8. Review performance and development of Defence health policies to recommend and adjust personnel selection procedures, standards and outcomes to support quality improvement.
9. Build and sustain effective relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.
10. Lead a team and be accountable to set work priorities and manage workflows.
About our Team
The Joint Health Unit, South Queensland, (JHU-SQ) mental health teams consist of highly performing mental health professionals with a dedication to supporting the larger mission of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
While the individual teams are managed by Health Centre Managers, you will work closely with them to provide technical and clinical guidance to the teams in the delivery of mental health services. You will work closely with the Psychology Manager, the Senior Mental Health Advisor and the Senior Military Psychology Officer in the JHU-SQ Headquarters, as well as the Staff Officer Grade One Mental Health Clinical Advisory Group in the Garrison Health Headquarters.
You will report directly to the Health Centre Manager of Enoggera Health Centre and provide them subject matter expertise on a range of complex clinical issues. You will have a small team of mental health professionals (MHP) and administrative support to coordinate and manage the JHU-SQ external network of mental health providers.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is an experienced psychologist who can demonstrate the ability to acquire in-depth knowledge and demonstrate compliance with legislative frameworks, government direction, policy requirements, and the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) mission in the delivery of mental health services.
The candidate will also be able to acquire and apply the skills to support other medical and allied health professionals in the support of mental health services.
Our ideal candidate will be dedicated to the intention, implementation, and compliance with Defence policy to enable operationally-focused, Command responsive, member-centred, and recovery-oriented mental health services that are safe, evidence based, and at a high standard.
They will be able to provide strategic-level advice and guidance to proposed technical and policy updates and provide the commensurate upskilling of clinical skills to the health workforce in the delivery of such policy and processes.
They will be able to engage in the establishment and maintenance of effective key stakeholder relationships to dependency Command as well as to the single services (Army, Navy, Air Force) and Joint Health Command colleagues in support of the strategic narrative determined by the Defence Health Strategy and One Defence approach to the delivery of mental health services in the ADF.
