Townsville Hospital and Health Service is the Public Healthcare provider for more than 250,000 people across a geographic area of 150,000km2, delivering a comprehensive range of services across 21 facilities, from primary care in regional locations to highly specialised care at the main hospital.

Townsville University Hospital, located adjacent to one of Queensland’s leading tertiary institutions, James Cook University, is the largest tertiary hospital in northern Australia, providing specialist referral services for 700,000 people living from Mackay, to the Torres Strait, to the Northern Territory border.

About your opportunity:

The Public Health Medical Officer will provide specialist Public Health medical support to the health services and communities in Townsville and tropical north Queensland, through disease monitoring, prevention and control, education and research.  Work with multidisciplinary teams to protect the health of the population.

The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following: 

  • Coordinate the surveillance, investigation and Public Health management of communicable diseases, including tropical and vector-borne conditions and environmental health issues, including the coordination, planning and support of immunisation programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues, culture and communication protocols, and those of other Culturally and Linguistically Diverse populations.
  • Ability to work well as both a leader and a member of a multidisciplinary Public Health Unit and to provide professional advice and training in Public Health issues, including teaching and supervision of trainees in Public Health.
  • Demonstrated high level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate equitable and effective Public Health programs and to prepare submissions, reports and articles for publication.
  • Understanding and application of contemporary leadership and management skills to develop and maintain an effective and motivated team, and participate in planning, budgeting and performance monitoring processes.
  • Well-developed skills in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating Public Health programs utilising a range of population level approaches and initiating, coordinating and/or contributing to human health risk assessments, risk communication and Public Health research.

  • Generous remuneration package value up to $483,811 p.a. comprising:
  • Salary range of $7827.20 to $9924.00 p.f. (L18-L27)
  • 4 weeks annual leave with 17.5% loading
  • 12.75% employer contribution to superannuation
  • Attraction and retention incentive allowance (50% base salary)
  • Motor vehicle allowance between $21,000 and $25,000 p.a
  • Professional development allowance of $21,500 p.a +3.6 weeks p.a leave
  • Other employment benefits may include: professional development, , shift and locality allowances, employee wellness and assistance programs, and access to corporate discounts.

Requirements:

  • Proof of qualification, registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and possession of a current practising certificate.
  • All applicants must be awarded SoCP by the THHS Credentialing and SoCP committee.
  • This is a Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) risk role: Hepatitis A/B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Pertussis.
  • Travel will be a requirement of this role.
  • Possession of class C drivers' licence.
  • Probation period may apply.
  • Pre-employment checks will be conducted.
