There is currently no ranger program operation, with the nearest Ranger bases located in Derby 238km and Fitzroy River 165km away. When re-established the Yungngora Ranger Program would care for Country and Cultural in an area more than 500,000 acres (2,025 km2).

The Yungngora Ranger program was started in 2021, with six local people funded as Aboriginal Rangers by the community and facilitated by the Yungngora Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) as the trustees of Noonkanbah land as the Native Title Prescribed Body Corporate.

Native title exists over Noonkanbah Station which has been developed and managed by traditional Owners, the Yungngora People, since 1976 and includes Walmatjarri, Nyikina and other language groups.

The lands around Noonkanbah were officially recognised with Native Title in 2007 under the responsibility of the Yungngora Aboriginal Corporation (YAC).

Our Vision: A safe and thriving collaborative community led by the voices of the Yungngora people that reflects a strong sense of cultural, social, and emotional wellbeing and economic empowerment through jobs and enterprises.

About the role

The Yungngora Ranger program was started in 2021, with six local people funded as Aboriginal

Rangers by the community and facilitated by the Yungngora Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) as the trustees of Noonkanbah land as the Native Title Prescribed Body Corporate.

Previously, the Yungngora Rangers supported the lands of Noonkanbah and the adjoining communities of Koorabye, Kadjina, Jimbalakudunj and Ngurttuwarta as they do not have current capacity to operate their own Ranger programs.

This project seeks to re-establish the Yungngora Aboriginal Ranger Program through the employment, training and equipping of five Aboriginal Ranger positions to re-commence vital land, fire and pest management activities in the Noonkanbah and neighbouring communities.

The Yungngora community will be empowered to lead the exploration of partnership the “Proper Way”- with Respect, Care and Honesty.

As part of the Yungngora Aboriginal Corporation Ranger Program, the Coordinator will work with the Rangers (employed under the Commonwealth funded Indigenous Ranger Program) to implement the Ranger Program for the Yungngora Community. Through funding from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ Ranger Program Development Fund, and in-kind support from local cross-industry partnerships, this project will enable the Yungngora Community to re-establish an Aboriginal Ranger Program that is trained, equipped, and led by the voices of the of Traditional Owners to deliver management operations.

The Project Control Group (PCG) will be setup for the delivery of this project and lead by the YAC CEO. The PCG will include stakeholders from YAC board, YAC members (that is Traditional Owners and local Yungngora people), the Senior Aboriginal Ranger Coordinator and other key community stakeholders.

The PCG will prepare a report to be presented at the quarterly YAC board meetings and for the annual YAC Annual General Meeting.
