Position Description

Fair Game is a not-for-profit organisation that believes sport and fitness are integral components of a healthy lifestyle. Through the provision of recycled sporting equipment, sport and health education programs we aim to: reduce the risk of lifestyle related disease, build social cohesion and improve mental well-being. Our beneficiaries include; rural, regional and remote communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, CALD communities and low socio-economic demographics. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic Recreation Officer who can plan, organise and lead our Fair Game Academy Volunteer Trips into remote and regional Western Australia to deliver our sport, fitness and health promotion programs.

The role will be responsible for planning, organising, and executing weeklong and weekend trips into Remote and Regional Western Australian communities to help our enthusiastic volunteers to deliver sport, health promotion and wellness programs to regional and remote communities across Western Australia.  We deliver programs spanning the state from the beautiful Kimberly, Pilbara and Mid West regions in northern WA and the renowned Goldfields and Wheatbelt communities to the east. You will split your time between trip planning with our Perth based team and being on the road with our amazing volunteers. 

Tasks include:

Whilst in regional community:

  • Engaging participants in Fair Game programs – for both ‘Game On!’ (sport) and ‘Healthy Communities’ (health promotion) activities
  • Planning sessions in conjunction with local stakeholders and community members 
  • Evaluating and coordinating Fair Game programs
  • Encouraging participants and other community members to participate in Fair Game activities
  • Training adult community members in Game On! activities so they are skilled to run sessions outside of Fair Game trips 
  • Promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices through modelling positive behaviours 
  • Supporting larger sporting activities coordinated by local stakeholders (e.g. carnivals, festivals), and liaising with community members to interpret and enforce rules and regulations relating to sport

Trip Coordination:

  • Engage remote communities in our “Recycle & Donate” program by coordinating sporting equipment requests, packing, and delivery of materials as needed to develop the community resources
  • Working closely with remote communities to book Fair Game visits
  • Planning and organising trip logistics
  • Organizing your team of volunteers (2-3 volunteers) and conducting pre-trip briefings and trainings
  • Heading out on regional trips (about 30 over the course of the year) and being the leader for the trips while in the regions
  • Conducting end of trip and program evaluations 
  • Helping us deliver on our vision of creating an equitable, healthier and more sustainable Australia!

The Recreation Coordinator role will travel about 24 weeks out of the year, with scheduling dependent on community needs.  Accommodation when you are working in the regions will be a mixture of hotels, donated community housing and school classrooms (with luxurious blow up mattresses!) depending on availability in the region.

The work schedule will often include weekend days on the road, which can be taken as time in lieu (pre-arranged with management).

  • Are willing to work a non-standard work week
  • Are cool under pressure and can think on your feet. 

Eligibility Criteria:

Essential

  • Clean driving record
  • Working with Children Check
  • National Police Clearance
  • Qualification in sports science, health sciences, education or similar
  • Experience in sports coaching, health, wellness, and/or fitness education program delivery
  • Experience in project planning

Desirable

  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Experience working with ATSI people
  • Experience working with and/or living in regional or remote locations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders

Remuneration: 

  • A salary of 70k per annum (+ super)
  • Note: When you are travelling on trips your accommodation, food, and travel will be paid for
