The Role
As the senior public affairs representative in the region, you will be required to:
- Establish close working relationships with regionally-based Defence groups and services, broader Defence community, state/territory government organisations and the media;
- Coordinate and manage Defence public affairs events and initiatives in the region, and when required, provide local-level support and management of serious and sensitive issues;
- Support senior personnel conduct media engagement and facilitate media training as required;
- Develop communications content to support Defence public affairs activities, including strategic communications strategies, media releases, talking points, reactive media plans, social media content and other materials as required;
- Maintain a comprehensive awareness of national Defence issues and how they translate to the regional level;
- Provide community relations support to military operations as required.
- The Canberra-based position additionally includes management of staff and coordination of media enquiries.
About our Team
The Media and Information Disclosure (MID) Branch is responsible for day-to-day media operations across Defence. MID Branch brings together media, public affairs, social media and digital media services to ensure the department’s messaging is clear, consistent and high quality.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate must be able to work under limited direction and autonomously. You will have:
- Experience and understanding of corporate communication and media environments;
- Meticulous writing, editing, proofreading and verbal communication skills;
- Well-developed interpersonal and stakeholder management skills including the ability to cultivate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships;
- Ability to work across a variety of media platforms;
- Ability to identify opportunities to change, adapt or improve communication outputs for Defence; and
- High-level analytical skills and a demonstrated capacity to manage multiple priorities and solve problems under pressure.
- An understanding of Defence’s priorities and the broader strategic environment is required to excel in this role.
- As our work supports the media cycle and Defence activities some after-hours work (including weekends) will be required, paid under overtime arrangements.
