Forensicare provides specialist forensic Mental Health services across 12 of Victoria's 14 prisons with expansion underway to include Western Plains in the Barwon region. Located at Port Phillip Prison in Truganina, VIC. St Paul's Unit is a 30-bed psychosocial rehabilitation service that provides specialist, voluntary Mental Health care, treatment and therapeutic programs to prisoners with a Mental Health diagnosis. Participants selected for the program require psychosocial rehabilitation to minimise risk of relapse and enhance their social functioning in preparation for returning to general prison environment or release to community.

About the Role:

The Mental Health Nurse (RPN3) delivers care within a custodial setting, practicing within a recovery framework and using sound judgement to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain a high standard of patient care. This position requires the Mental Health Nurse to demonstrate leadership skills and undertake ‘At Risk’ duties as allocated.  In this regard, the Mental Health Nurse recognises the needs of the individual within the boundaries set by the profession, Forensicare and correctional services.

Duties:

  • Provision of crisis intervention assessment to prisoners throughout the facility as appropriate.
  • Formulation and documentation of patient centred care plans.
  • Completion of initial and ongoing risk assessment of patients and liaison with the interdisciplinary team to provide a safe environment.
  • Administration of medication to patients and monitoring of the effect on patients.
  • Work within an ethically and legally sound framework.
  • Delivery of high quality care coordination, ‘At Risk’ assessments and provision of individual and group programs.
  • Provide comprehensive recovery-orientated assessment and treatment to patients in a custodial setting.
  • Formulation and documentation of patient centred Mental Health Recovery Plans for allocated case managed patients.
  • Completion of initial and ongoing risk assessment of patients and liaison with the multidisciplinary team, and custodial staff as required, to provide a safe environment.
  • Consult and collaborate with the inter-disciplinary team – including G4S, St Vincent’s Correctional Health Service, programs staff, patients, carers and other relevant agencies for the development of risk assessments, care planning and delivery.
  • Maintain comprehensive, patient focused, clinical documentation.
  • Participate in the provision of programs to patients.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio assisting in the ongoing development of staff and the team.
  • Provide crisis intervention assessments and risk management plans to prisoners throughout the facility as appropriate, incorporating responsiveness to the individuals’ particular strengths, needs, goals and values. 
  • Build and maintain effective relationships between the unit/team and patient’s significant others, support people and support networks to enhance the patient’s recovery journey.

About You:

  • Holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent and possess current registration with AHPRA.
  • A minimum 3 years Mental Health nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Mental Health consumer recovery. 
  • An awareness of the organisational structure and policies and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated thorough working knowledge of current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) standards of practice and contemporary Mental Health nursing practices
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently undertake comprehensive health assessments of patients. 
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate nursing interventions, counselling and therapeutic programs. 
  • Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • An ability to practise in a complex and diverse environment. 
  • An ability to participate in ongoing staff education at unit or program management level.

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent.
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA).
  • The successful candidate will be required to register their qualifications on eCredential
