Registered NurseHaematology and Bone Marrow Transplant

  • Integrated clinical Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant service working together with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
  • Supported ratios 1:3 daytime, 1:5 night-time
  • One of only three allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation units in Victoria
  • Specialist cancer nursing training provided

About the team:


Our ward is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant team. No Haematology/BMT experience necessary, we will teach you the knowledge and skills to make you a successful Cancer Nurse.

7B is a specialised service providing the highest quality care to our patients. Our multidisciplinary haematology team brings together world-class clinical and laboratory research expertise to ensure patients with blood disorders receive exceptional care.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Focus on nursing care to patients requiring allogenic Bone Marrow Transplantation, acute leukaemia inpatient care as well as those who have been diagnosed with classical haematology disorders
  • Patients on the ward may require; stem cell transplant, chemotherapy/immunotherapy, blood and electrolyte replacement, red cell exchange, management of treatment related side effects (nausea/vomiting, mucositis, tumour lysis syndrome, graft vs host disease), be monitored for signs of sepsis whilst immunocompromised or increased monitoring whilst on a clinical trial.
  • Support the ANUM and NUM to ensure high quality nursing care is provided. This includes the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for care of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant patients
  • Develop specialist skills such as CVAD care, chemotherapy and stem cell administration
  • Contribute to high quality care aimed at improving the patient experience
  • Opportunities to attend education study days; BMT Study day, Classical Haematology Study day new 2023), Leukaemia Study Day (new in 2024) Beyond the Basics (2 day Haematology course) and 
  • Education programs including RISE (Registered Nurse Introduction to Specialty Education) and a Graduate Certificate through University of Melbourne

What you'll need to succeed:

  • You are an AHPRA registered Nurse with ward experience and are willing to work a range of AM/PM & ND shifts, within our supportive and dedicated multidisciplinary team
  • You have a high level of reliability, flexibility and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • You are committed to live The Melbourne Way: putting people first, leading with kindness and achieving excellence together
  • You are ready for an enhanced variety of clinical experiences to develop your professional growth
  • Competency in intravenous and cannulation and the management of centrally venous access devices
  • Competency in the administration of antineoplastic drugs (eviQ ADAC competency or equivalent) with relevant clinical experience
  • Recent clinical experience in acute haematology is desirable
