The position will be based at Sydney Local Health District Mental Health Inpatient facilities.

About the role

The Sydney Local Health District Mental Health Service is committed to the provision of quality health services to the Mental Health community. We aim to deliver Mental Health nursing services which, through research and innovative commitments, sets standards that are emulated by other national and international nursing organisations. 

Nursing services are seeking experienced Registered Nurses seeking a career change to the speciality of Mental Health Nursing, to undertake the 12 month Transition Program into Mental Health Nursing. The Transition Program into Mental Health Nursing provides a pathway for the development of nurses so that they may acquire expertise in the management of patients and clients within the speciality of Mental Health

The programme includes academic coursework and clinical learning, with 3 x 4 month rotations to enable the provision of practical experience in a wide range of speciality streams within Mental Health. Following the 12 month program, applicants would then continue as permanent employees of the Mental Health Service. 

This Transition Program is for experienced Registered Nurses who have not worked in a Mental Health setting. Applicants must have a minimum of two years full time post-graduate Registered Nurse experience to be considered for this program. New Graduate Registered Nurses are ineligible for this Transition Program.

The program will commence on 15 July 2024.

We are looking for someone who has … 

  • A minimum of 2 years full time post-graduate Registered Nursing experience outside of the Mental Health setting.
  • Current nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) and demonstrated understanding of evidence informed practice and critical thinking.
  • Evidence of Australian Work Rights and the ability to work a 7 day rotating roster.

About working for SLHD

This is a Category A position. To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy (PD2023_022)

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course (2 doses) of a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine (except for the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine which is approved by the TGA as a single dose primary course). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW. A NSW Health agency may require further information about the medical contraindication (including but not limited to an Immunisation Medical Exemption form – IM011 form).

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
