Job location
Forensicare provides specialist forensic mental health services across 12 of Victoria's 14 prisons, with expansion underway to include Western Plains in the Barwon region. Located at Port Phillip Prison in Truganina, VIC. St Paul's Unit is a 30-bed psychosocial rehabilitation service that provides specialist, voluntary mental health care, treatment and therapeutic programs to prisoners with a mental health diagnosis. Participants selected for the program require psychosocial rehabilitation to minimise the risk of relapse and enhance their social functioning in preparation for returning to the general prison environment or release to the community.
About the Role:
The Registered Psychiatric Nurse Grade 2 delivers care within a custodial setting, practising within a recovery framework and using sound judgment to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain a high standard of patient care. This position works with a multidisciplinary team to provide care and facilitate recovery through evidence-based treatment approaches and participation in the delivery of therapeutic programs.
Duties:
- Demonstrate initiative in the delivery of nursing care.
- Apply the recognised nursing competencies and psychiatric nursing standards of practice.
- Use an evidence-based practice approach to nursing.
- Integrate security and therapeutic practices.
- Develop a therapeutic relationship that respects the patient’s choices, experiences and circumstances. This involves building on strengths, holding hope and enhancing resilience to promote recovery.
- Contribute to therapeutic programs and deliver individual and group programs to the patients on the unit.
- Utilise a planned, systematic approach to providing care consistent with the patient's mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, social, forensic, and cultural needs.
- Competently undertake a case management role for allocated patients.
- Formulate, document and evaluate patient-focused mental health recovery plans for allocated patients.
- Contribute to risk assessment and development of risk management plans in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.
- Facilitate the involvement of patients and carers in mental health recovery planning and delivery.
- Consult and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, Consumer Consultants and other key stakeholders in care planning and delivery.
- Provide education and links with resources to patients and carers.
- Administer and monitor medication's effects and educate patients and carers about prescribed medication.
About You:
- Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent.
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA).
