Job description

The Australian Government is simplifying and aligning rules and processes for Australian businesses that export and import, including the delivery of an STS Regulatory Reform Roadmap. This is a collaborative effort involving close engagement and partnership with over 30 agencies. The STS Unit has a central role working across agencies involved in cross-border trade to prioritise reforms, conduct system-wide regulatory analysis, bring together government and industry stakeholders and advise Ministers and senior APS executives on opportunities for reform.

The APS5/6 Regulatory Reform Policy Advisor is part of a small team within the STS Unit dedicated to simplifying and aligning complex policy, process, regulations and legislation governing cross-border trade across multiple agencies and sectors. This role is instrumental in driving significant Regulatory Reform efforts that underpin the STS reform agenda, focusing on substantial outcomes that enhance Australia's cross-border trade system.
In this capacity, the Regulatory Reform Policy Advisor, is tasked with providing essential support to the Austrade Executive, Director Regulatory Reform and Senior Regulatory Policy Advisors by delivering expert policy research and analysis, engaging with stakeholders, and supporting decision making by Ministers and APS senior executives on future reforms.

Furthermore, the Regulatory Reform Policy Advisor will support the broader STS agenda by contributing to briefings and reports for STS Unit senior members and Ministers, ensuring a coordinated, efficient approach to Regulatory Reform. Managing a discrete portfolio of stakeholders, this role is essential in supporting consistency and integration of information, actions and outcomes across agencies.

  • Support the development and maintenance of productive relationships with government agencies, industry organisations and businesses.
  • Contribute to the coordination and development of ministerial briefing products and input to Cabinet submissions, new policy proposals and related materials.
  • Actively contribute to the implementation of the Regulatory Reform Roadmap by identifying Regulatory Reform opportunities and advocating for reforms.
