The Policy Advisor works closely with staff and supporter teams to ensure that AIA’s policy recommendations to the government align with human rights laws and frameworks. You will advise and facilitate on the development of advocacy work, within the context of domestic campaigns to promote and defend the human rights of all people in Australia.
As part of this role, you will:
- Provide high-quality advice and analysis to inform and shape AIA’s policy recommendations on human rights to federal and state/territory governments and parliaments
- Advise on and contribute to the conduct of research, policy development and planning of activities
- Review legislation impacting human rights and help develop AIA’s responses
- Support campaign project delivery, including preparation of policy briefs, parliamentary submissions and MP newsletters
- Represent AI Australia’s campaigns to decision makers, departmental staff, diplomats and other influencers in an impactful, authoritative and professional manner
- Liaise with the Parliamentary Friends of Amnesty group to foster strong relationships and providing support to campaigners in their advocacy efforts
- Support and provide advice to campaigners and senior AI Australia representatives on advocacy and external affairs matters including strategies for influencing key decision makers and public positioning of AI Australia’s work
- Support the Casework Team in providing an appropriate response to asylum inquiries, including referral to third parties, preparation of letters of support, country information and other lobbying activities
- Advise and consult with the Casework & Expert Content Coordinator on recruiting, training and supervising interns and volunteers to assist in the delivery of AI Australia’s refugee casework program
- Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of project and campaign outcomes and make recommendations for greater impact and effectiveness
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Strong knowledge of human rights law and frameworks.
- Ability to represent AIA’s campaigns and human rights research to decision makers, departmental staff, diplomats and other influencers in an impactful, authoritative and professional manner
- Demonstrated experience in or commitment to working with rights holders
- Understanding of Australian parliamentary processes and experience in developing government relations and advocacy strategies that deliver positive outcomes
- Ability to provide analysis and advice to a high standard within agreed timelines.
- High level communication & interpersonal skills – including demonstrated public speaking & presentation skills and the ability to represent the organisation in public contexts, including in the media
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Experience in developing and implementing participatory processes with rights holders
- Strong knowledge of Australia’s refugee policy

The salary for this position is $110,993 (FTE) + super + not for profit salary packaging.
