Research and Evaluation Manager - 12-month max. term contract - 0.6 FTE

  • 12-month max. term contract, full-time. Forest Lodge (2037) office, predominantly office based.

MATES in Construction Australia are an established charity who provide suicide prevention through community development programs on site, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. MATES vision is to be Australia’s leading industry suicide prevention organisation focusing on raising awareness, building capacity, providing help and research.


Role responsibilities

Reporting into the Manager Program and Operations, the Research and Evaluation Manager will optimise the MATES program and practice framework. This broad role will be responsible for program evaluation and monitoring, deriving insights from MATES Research and translating them into practical solutions that support advocacy and operational improvement.

  • Work closely with the research team, partners, and end-user groups across the study development lifecycle, supporting with selection/recruitment of study samples, development of data collection tools, preparing materials for ethics submissions, writing policies/protocols, and maintaining a database of study participants.
  • Provide secretarial support for the MATES Australia National Academic Reference Group.
  • Collaborate with researchers and key stakeholders to drive monitoring and Evaluation and optimise program outcomes (using Research and program evaluation information to support future funding submissions).
  • Work with key stakeholders internally and externally to create and share research insights and collateral; communicate research findings across multiple channels (formal meetings and presentations, article contributions and social media).
  • Ensure resources are available to support implementation of research initiatives and project operations across high-risk industries.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects, maintaining project reports and documentation -following up on actions and risks as needed.
  • Ad hoc travel will be required.

Essential Requirements

The successful candidate will have a talent for translating research into practical action and will have project management experience from inception to completion. They will be experienced in program monitoring and Evaluation and be passionate about the impact of these programs across the communities they support.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Sciences (or a related discipline) and proven experience in managing complex Research and Evaluation projects.
  • Experience in the creation of data collection instruments (such as questionnaires) and the management of databases.
  • Demonstrated experience in translating research findings into the operational context.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in writing proposals and reports and presenting findings.
  • Proven ability to liaise and work effectively with a range of stakeholders from policy and research environments and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team to achieve project goals and meet deadlines.
  • The successful candidate will need a full driver’s license and be able to complete a satisfactory Police Check.
