Together we are making a difference for kids living with genetic disease.
Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) was Australia’s first dedicated paediatric research facility and is now one of the world’s most highly regarded independent medical research organisations. Our research focuses on the four key areas impacting children’s health: cancer, genomics and genetic diseases, neurobiology, and embryology. CMRI’s research programs are supported by state-of-the-art facilities and committed research and support staff. Our achievements are made possible by a loyal network of community supporters, highly engaged donors and the very successful Jeans for Genes® fundraising campaign.
Applications are invited for the position of Research Assistant (RA) at the CMRI’s Gene Therapy Research Unit (GTRU, two positions available). The successful candidates will work under the direction of senior scientists in a talented multidisciplinary team and will apply recombinant gene delivery systems and genome editing technologies to the development of novel gene therapy strategies for the treatment of genetic diseases affecting infants and children. The work will involve a wide range of molecular biology and tissue culture tools and techniques, including, but not limited to, maintenance and manipulation of mammalian cells under PC2 conditions. The successful candidates will also be responsible for performing basic molecular biology QA/QC assays, including but not limited to RNA/DNA purification, cloning, PCR, western blot, enzyme activity assays, ELISA and transfection.
The work could also involve the use of small animal models of human disease and whole human tissues.
In addition, the positions involve undertaking routine tasks related to the maintenance of the laboratory and preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Appointments are initially for a fixed term of 12 months and continuing tenure is subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
The successful candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent and have practical experience working in PC2 laboratory conditions, general molecular biology, mammalian tissue culture and small animal handling. The candidates must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail, as well as the ability/will to improve their professional knowledge (e.g. learning new protocols and techniques). Preference will be given to applicants with prior hands-on experience working with viral vectors and animal procedures such as injections and blood collection. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with PC operating systems and proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is required. Applications are encouraged from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with excellent technical ability and communication skills.
The successful candidates will be provided with a competitive remuneration package in accordance with qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include the provision of a Public Benevolent Institution salary packaging scheme and participation in an employer-contributed superannuation fund.
