Job description

An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Assistant to join the Bioimage Analysis Core of the Centre for Dynamic Imaging in the Advanced Technology and Biology Division at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position
The Bioimage Analysis Core in the Centre for Dynamic Imaging at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, provides researchers with access to expertise and cutting-edge knowledge and resources for the analysis of a wide range of biological imaging techniques ranging from light-sheet, confocal, and widefield microsocpy, micro-CT and spatial-omics methods. We are seeking a highly motivated and well organised image analyst with qualifications in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, physics, bioinformatics or a related field.

The successful candidate will possess advanced computer skills in programming using Python or Java and experience working with image analysis software, such as FIJI/ImageJ, QuPath, napari, Scikit-image, Matlab, Imaris or similar. An essential part of the role will be to provide expert assistance with the analysis of content rich datasets, such as those generated by spatial-omics methods such as Merscope, Xenium and MIBIscope. This will include the development of automated analysis pipelines and the evaluation of new methods of analysis, which are tailored to individual projects. Any prior experience in working with spatial-omics datasets will be advantageous. Knowledge of, and experience in using, a range of optical microscopy techniques is desirable, but not required.

The candidate is expected to provide training to researchers on how to use various software packages and to assist with the organization of workshops or development of online tools. They will work closely with researchers and other members of the Bioimage Analysis Core to develop suites of tools for common workflows and streamline these through the use of the Institute's virtual desktop and HPC infrastructure.

This position will suit a self-motivated individual with a high-level of attention to detail who is capable of working with minimal supervision within a team of scientists that are dedicated to maintaining a world-class optical and spatial imaging platform at the Institute.

Selection Criteria
Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • A relevant qualification in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, bioinformatics, physics or a related field.
  • Knowledge of image processing and computational data acquisition
  • Knowledge of or experience with computer vision or machine learning/AI approaches for image analysis
  • Advanced computer skills and strong level of experience working with various image analysis software packages
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent time management skills and a high level of motivation in achieving research outcomes

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the field of spatial-omics and its data processing requirements
  • Knowledge of and the use of optical microscopy techniques
  • Experience in confocal microscopy, spatial omics or other advanced microscopy techniques
  • Experience working in a medical research environment
  • Experience in data management
