Research Assistant: £31,396 to £32,982 per annum
Research Associate £33,966 to £37,099 per annum

The Role
Join Newcastle University's School of Computing as a Research Assistant / Associate in Computational Neurology and immerse yourself in cutting-edge research with a dynamic team dedicated to innovation and knowledge dissemination.
You will be working on the ‘ACORN’ project “Assessing and controlling seizure-modulating fluctuations”. This £1.1m UKRI-funded project supports Dr. Yujiang Wang's exploration of epileptic seizures. Dr. Wang aims to develop computer tools akin to predicting severe weather, using brain recordings, wearables, and environmental sensors to analyse seizure fluctuations. The goal is to understand individual seizure patterns, forecast upcoming seizures, and create treatments to potentially lessen their severity. Ultimately, this research aims to enhance the lives of those with epilepsy and their caregivers.
You will be at the forefront of conveying highly technical material to diverse stakeholders, facilitating discussions, and presenting research findings at conferences and in publications. Your role will involve designing and delivering engaging presentations on research outputs to varied audiences, including research sponsors, academic peers, and non-academic stakeholders.
Collaboration lies at the heart of this role. Working closely with the Principal Investigator and colleagues within the research group, you'll identify new research avenues, devise innovative methods, and expand our research portfolio. When challenges arise, your creativity and problem-solving skills will shine as you propose and implement solutions in consultation with the team.
Networking is key. You'll build bridges internally and externally, fostering relationships for potential future research collaborations. Managing your research activities and resources, you'll actively contribute to project planning while also imparting your expertise through training sessions for peers, visitors, and students.
Beyond research, you'll be part of the School of Computing's wider engagement, supporting the department and the broader discipline through your citizenship and active participation.

Key Accountabilities
  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator
  • To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals
  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator
  • To work with the Principal Investigator and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator and offering creative or innovative solutions
  • To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration
  • To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects
  • To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate
  • To be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect
  • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Evidence of being able to conduct research in medical data analysis or modelling
  • Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly ranked interdisciplinary journals
  • Demonstrable ability to present research papers at national/international conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career
  • Demonstrate strong mathematical and computational abilities
  • Demonstrate excellent programming ability in languages such as MATLAB or Python
Desirable
  • A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career
  • Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics
  • Evidence of experience in contributing to collaborative research projects
  • A keen eye for visual presentation, software design, and in writing clear, concise, elegant code
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research

  • Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines

Qualifications
  • PhD awarded (or nearing completion) in Computing Science or a closely related discipline
