About the Role

Based in Melbourne, Victoria, this position is responsible for undertaking research-related support activities associated with the Australian Research Council Discovery Project titled ‘Locating LGBTIQ+ youth in the archive: Telling new stories for belonging’, working with a team of Chief Investigators from the University of South Australia, Australian National University and La Trobe University.

The Chief Investigators are:

  • Associate Professor Daniel Marshall (UniSA)
  • Professor Mary Lou Rasmussen (Australian National University)
  • Associate Professor Timothy Jones (La Trobe University)

The key purpose of this role is to conduct archival research at the Australian Queer Archives regarding LGBTIQA+ young people and youth histories in Australia. Other associated tasks will be involved, including establishing a digital database of research material, and other project-related tasks including website development, administration, reporting, and presentation.

Frequent on-site archival research will be required (archives based in Melbourne; interstate or overseas travel and travel within Victoria may be required).

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Postgraduate qualification in an area relevant to the research and/or relevant experience i.e. working in archives, knowledge of LGBTIQ+ histories or knowledge of histories of youth and childhood
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated through written work such as research reports and publications, and excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and external partners
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, demonstrating ability to manage multiple priorities and demands in the context of research, independently and as part of a research team
  • Ability to plan and conduct archival research, liaising with relevant stakeholders.
  • Experience with data entry and database management

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience working with and/or conducting social research with young people
  • Experience with Website development
