About the Role
As a Research Data Specialist at the University of Melbourne, you'll play a crucial role in advancing data-intensive research within the Melbourne Data Analytics Platform (MDAP). Joining a dynamic team of around twenty specialists, your responsibilities will span advising on, applying, and sometimes developing cutting-edge software and systems. From collection to analysis, storage, and presentation, you'll be at the forefront of supporting Research Data across the University. You'll actively contribute to fostering a community of like-minded specialists across the University

Collaborating closely with the Platform Manager and MDAP colleagues, you'll dive into diverse, collaborative research projects spanning days to months. This role offers you a unique chance to cultivate lasting relationships within the University research community, build a track record in interdisciplinary collaboration, and elevate the visibility of MDAP both within the University and across the broader research domain.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing advice, support, and development to researchers.
  • Acknowledged contributions to diverse research outputs, including publications, creative works, grant applications, patents, or open-source software and data projects.
  • Contributing to the skill development of graduate researchers, focusing on research project design, data management, and analysis.

You will also have:

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in research software development, data management and/or analysis.
  • Strong technical expertise in at least one of data collection, management, analysis or visualisation.

The Chancellery Research and Enterprise portfolio is led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and works across a number of areas including:

  • Research and research training strategy
  • Research partnerships and collaborations, including industry, government, research organisations and institutes – both domestically and internationally
  • Research infrastructure, including cross-Faculty, whole-of-University, and interdisciplinary research initiatives, including implementation of key strategic initiatives
  • Research performance and impact, including research metrics, research rankings and government-sponsored exercises
  • Research systems strategy (how our enterprise systems support the business of research)
  • Research ethics and integrity, including consideration of research misconduct
