About This Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to join the School of Dentistry and support the . As a Research Fellow, you will engage in research to further your expertise and growing research profile to achieve national recognition in your discipline. At this level, it is expected that you will efficiently manage service and engagement roles and activities.
As a research focused academic at Level B, you will be expected to fulfil the necessary requirements to contribute to the effective supervision of Honour and Higher Degree by Research students.
Key responsibilities will include:
Research
Producing quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets. Areas of research may include:
preparation of 3D printed and electrospun scaffolds for tissue engineering applications;
cell seeding and analysis through functional assays;
biofunctionalization of polymeric biomaterials, materials analysis including composition and topographical evaluation (confocal and scanning electron microscopy); and
culture of mammalian cells including oral fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells and macrophages.
Experience with small and large animal models of periodontal and or-dental regeneration
Ability to work towards developing the regulatory frameworks for clinical translation of tissue engineering strategies for periodontal and oro-facial regeneration.
Supervision and researcher development
Demonstrate a track record of the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
Citizenship and service
Demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.
Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration, and active participation in priority activities for the unit

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position through to 31 December 2025. At Academic level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $106,079 - $125,687, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $124,113 - $147,054 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
The greater of joining the UQ community are broad: from being part of a university, to recognition of prior service with other Australian universities, up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave, 17.5% annual leave loading, and genuine career progression opportunities via the academic promotions process.
About You
Applicants must have at least a PhD or equivalent in biofabrication and/or tissue engineering.
An emerging profile in research in biofabrication and/or tissue engineering.
Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.
Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities.
Broad knowledge of regenerative medicine.
An understanding of the regulatory framework established by the Therapeutic Goods Australia (TGA) for the testing of tissue engineered constructs for human use.
Expertise in the workflow aspects of translating clinical imaging data into individualized three dimensional printed scaffolds.
An understanding of the regulatory requirements (Quality Management Systems, International Standardization Organization) established for the manufacturing of implantable bioengineered constructs.
High level technical skills and experience in biomaterials and additive manufacturing.
Ability to design and conduct research experiments with limited supervision.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate and interpret results and presentation of analysed data.
Preparation of scientific reports with high standards, ability to priorities own workload, work independently and meet deadlines.
High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
Understanding of tissue engineering principles and willingness to work with animals.
Expertise with small and large animal models.
Understanding of the workflow aspects of translating patient imaging data into additively manufactured customized implantable tissue engineered constructs.
Experience with the regulatory environment governing the implantation of tissue engineered constructs into humans.
