About the Role
The Research Fellow role offers an exciting opportunity to spearhead cutting-edge research within an Australian Government-funded Farming Systems experiment at the University of Melbourne's Dookie Campus in regional Victoria.

The research focuses on climate and drought resilience aspects of cropping, mixed farming and pasture systems. The field experiments at the University of Melbourne research farm are the centrepiece of a collaborative effort in conjunction with the University of Tasmania, Federation University, and the Farming Systems groups Birchip Cropping Group, Southern Farming Systems and Riverine Plains.

You will conduct scientifically robust field experiments, analyse complex data, and contribute to a large-scale collaborative research program.

Dookie campus is an agricultural facility set on the tranquil rolling hills between Shepparton and Benalla in Victoria. Relocation support can be negotiated for successful candidates.

Please note: This position requires the appointee to work in regional Victoria, where there is no public transport connection available. A valid driving license for Victoria is required for this role.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You will be expected to significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop research expertise in Crop Science and Farming Systems Research with an increasing degree of autonomy.
  • You will have key role in implementing and conducting research experiments, including undertaking field sampling campaigns, laboratory analyses, data collection and data evaluation and other relevant activities necessary to conduct scientifically robust experiments.
  • Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff you will be expected to conduct internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals. You will contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard.
  • Actively participate in research seminars and conferences to disseminate research findings as opportunities arise.

Who We Are Looking For

You will possess the demonstrated ability to engage with professional and industry bodies, as well as stakeholders in agriculture, fostering collaborative partnerships. Additionally, you will exhibit the capability to independently develop, administer, and successfully complete well-designed research projects with minimal supervision.

You will also have:

  • Completion of a PhD in Crop Science, agronomy, agricultural science or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in field-based research on crops or Farming Systems Research with a focus on plant production
  • A demonstrated aptitude for research, with a publication record in well regarded scientific journals and demonstrated ability to prepare manuscripts and reports

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
