The Research Infrastructure Platforms Manager provides operational management, expert advice and guidance throughout the translation and implementation of strategy, policy and planning within the Research Platforms unit. Ensures effective general management of operational and administrative systems, processes, and programs to meet these requirements in alignment with University policies and practices. Develops operational plans to guide the organisation and utilisation of operational resources to meet the priorities and objectives of the unit. Manages operational budgets and prepares reports as required for management groups and governance committees. Ensures compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory controls and ensures a safe working environment for all staff.

The RI Platforms Manager is responsible for pro-actively and constructively engaging with Core Facility operations managers and directors, and Research Service Unit heads, and deciding on the prioritisation of urgent operational matters to ensure optimum use of the Director, Research Infrastructure's, and Pro Vice Chancellor, Research Infrastructure's (PVC-RI) time. The RI Platforms Manager will actively seek to leverage the core competencies of the University's central service providers to optimise research platforms operations and ensure that appropriate services are provided, and decisions made in accordance with University policies and procedures.

This role requires initiative and capability for both independent decision-making as well as sound judgment on when consultation is required with respect to decisions. The incumbent uses judgement to ensure operating activity maintains compliance with governance and controls, and the mitigation of risks. The RI Platforms Manager will utilise considerable experience, business acumen and problem-solving expertise to make decisions and recommendations as well as appropriate escalations on broad and complex issues which impact on the operations of the Division.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• provide strategic advice and operational leadership to the Director, Research Infrastructure (Platform Operations) and PVC-RI throughout the implementation of strategy and related business plans, monitoring and reporting on progress; and identifying and making recommendations to address implementation challenges
  
• coordinate the operations of the Research Platforms to maximise strategic advantage from central management of high-end specialist Research Infrastructure that support University research priorities
  
• provide effective financial management support for Core Research Facilities and Research Service Units
  
• manage communications and relationships with key stakeholders across the University
  
• implement governance and control and key compliance requirements for Core Research Facilities
  
• support the identification and management of risks that threaten the efficient and effective execution of the strategy or business plans, or the delivery of core services within core research facilities and research services units, and the structured and coordinated approach to mitigating the potential risks eventuating.
  

About you

• degree qualifications, preferably in science or engineering, with relevant experience in operations management, business administration and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  
• demonstrated skills, capabilities and experience in the analysis and development of business and administrative systems (including business planning, and budget processes, and people management) in a scientifically sophisticated research-oriented environment
  
• demonstrated high-level commitment to, and capability for managing continuous operational improvement
  
• demonstrated ability to undertake research and consultation, to draft papers and reports, and support senior management decision making
  
• experience in driving and managing change
  
• financial management experience and literacy, experience managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure for a project.
