Duration: 2 years months fixed term

Remuneration: $96,960 + 17% super + annual leave loading

Location: Kensington, NSW

Why this role matters:

The Research Officer will play a key role in the Justice Health Research Program (JHRP), School of Population Health. Since 2010, JHRP has sought to deliver on its mission of generating new knowledge and developing interventions tackling the social determinants of offending, preventing incarceration, and improving health, justice, and welfare outcomes for those in contact with the justice system.

The position will provide technical and research assistance to senior research staff in activities associated with a research project funded by the Ian Potter Foundation titled “Reducing systemic inequity in health services in prisons for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”.

The aim of the project is to assess the feasibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community-Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) accessing selected Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items to provide a sustainable funding model for holistic and culturally appropriate health care delivery in Australian prisons.

The role of Research Officer will report to the Professor and has no direct reports.

Key Accountabilities (but not limited to):

  • Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research to support the delivery of the research project.
  • Undertake discipline-appropriate research activities, e.g. surveys, literature reviews, data gathering, evaluation and/or recording of results using appropriate research methods.
  • Provide support to obtain and maintain ethical approvals.
  • Contribute to research papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes to the scientific and wider community. Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.

Skills Required:

  • A university degree in public health or related discipline including psychology, health services management, social sciences or law, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training, or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in methodologically rigorous data collection, stakeholder consultation and codesign, and/or research evaluation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
