The Opportunity

  • Bring your expertise in CDR technologies & social/environmental science into a varied role
  • Partner with industry, governments and community to deliver scientific impact
  • Grow your research career with CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency!

Interested in being part of a collaborative research initiative focused on contributing to Australia’s net-zero goal? We are currently seeking a motivated Research Scientist to join us in an exciting role that will work closely with R&D, industry and communities to co-design pathways that address the social & ethical risks associated with the Deployment of CDR technologies.

At CSIRO, our research is dedicated to addressing the challenges and opportunities of the environmental sector, now and into the future. We bring together our capabilities and expertise across different disciplines and domains, to align and support the nation in creating a better and more sustainable future. One of such initiatives is the ‘Responsible Transition Pathways For New Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Technologies’ project – a collaborative multi-year research project between CSIRO’s CarbonLock Future Science Platform, Responsible Innovation Future Science Platform, and Environment Business Unit.

Joining this project as a Research Scientist, you will play a key role in establishing and testing a transition framework with a wide range of stakeholders from research, industry, government, and community. The project aims to identify responsible pathways to the development and Deployment of CDR, which requires robust assessment of the social & ethical risks involved, and developing a system-level understanding of how various stakeholders might play a role to upscale CDR technologies. Therefore, you will be applying your research capabilities and domain knowledge to conduct mixed-method research (involving both quantitative and qualitative data), design and test frameworks, and better understand and map the influence of societal processes on technology development and deployment.

If you enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team environment, forming collaborative partnerships, bringing fresh perspectives to research initiatives, and making a real difference with your work, this would be an exciting and fulfilling role for you! CSIRO champions a diverse and inclusive culture, supports flexible work arrangements, and offers excellent professional development opportunities to grow your skills & career.

Your duties will include:

  • Conducting mixed-method research, under the supervision of the project leader – as a starting point, identifying factors that mark a responsible transition with regard to CDR technologies and ways to measure the capacity of NET transitions.
  • Performing cutting-edge science to position CSIRO as a scientific thought leader in the responsible development and Deployment of CDR technologies in Australia.
  • Developing new theoretical approaches to measure social and ethical risks of CDR technologies transitions.
  • Testing and validating a framework to assess longer-term sustainability impacts of CDR technologies on social governance.
  • Designing a national-scale survey to address research questions of the project, and subsequently collecting and analysing research data for reporting.
  • Building strategic relationships with relevant scientific, industrial, and government stakeholders.
  • Producing scientific publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, and making high-quality presentations at domestic and international conferences.

Location: Brisbane (Dutton Park), QLD

Salary: AU$105K – AU$114K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years; Full-time

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline, such as social science, psychology, environmental and social governance, or environmental engineering.
  • A demonstrated record of publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
  • Highly developed communication skills in a range of formats (oral, written etc.) and to range of audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, research team, as well as the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
  • A significant record of science innovation and creativity, well developed research skills, and the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
  • Ability to effectively manage a number of competing priorities simultaneously and carry out non-routine tasks under limited direction.
