As our Research Scientist (Physiology/Agronomy), you will:
- Assist in the design and delivery of glasshouse, and field trials to evaluate treatments and increase understanding of a range of sweet potato research issues to drive productivity and sustainability.
- Participate in glasshouse and field experiments at research facilities and on commercial properties in regional Queensland, in collaboration with other DAF staff and industry representatives.
- Assist with the collection, collation, analysis and interpretation of data from research experiments.
- Prepare and contribute to reports, online resources and communication materials for stakeholders, industry, and funding bodies. Deliver oral and written presentations at farmer workshops, field days and demonstrations.
- Provide general (physiology, agronomy, pest and disease management) advice and support to horticultural industries where required.
- Assist project leader to develop new project ideas to address industry priorities.
- Work effectively as a member of a team, maintaining a high standard of work and providing assistance to team members as required to meet RnD milestones. Contribute to a vegetable research team (and the broader Horticulture teams) by participating in team meetings and by supporting other team members.
- Maintain an active professional development program and keep up to date with relevant research advances in nematology and soil ecology.
- Contribute to business unit performance, adhering to the Department's Code of Conduct, including the principles and practices of employment equity, ethical conduct and workplace health and safety.
- Ultimately, you will gain knowledge of agronomy, physiology and pest and disease management to provide information on sustainable production techniques for Queensland's horticultural production systems.
What you will bring
Essential requirements
- A degree in Science, Horticulture or Agricultural Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualifications.
- A current "C" class driver's license is a requirement for this role.
- Be prepared to work out of hours and to travel away from your base location from time to time as required by work.
- Ability to work outdoors to conduct research trials in a tropical environment and preparedness to work with and handle chemical pesticides in the course of research experiments.
- For international applicants, qualifications will need to be assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
