Primary Responsibilities
• Construction, erection, installation, renovation and repair of residential, commercial roofing coverings and structures to form a secure, protective, and waterproof surface.
• Cutting, shaping, and fitting of timber, terracotta, ceramic and concrete tiles, and prefabricated metal residential/commercial/industrial roofing span materials including CSR Monier Tiles, roofing structures and fittings, pitched roof frames, timber and steel batons, eaves, metal bracing, gang nail and roof trusses made of timber and steel.
• Construct timber and metal roofing, roofing parts and components on site for installation and the installation of prefabricated timber and metal roofing structures and components.
• Undertake work at heights with use of safety equipment and PPP equipment at all times. Use of power and hand tools including hand and power operated saws, measuring equipment, hammers, nail guns, levels, nails, and other fixtures including gang nail, tech screws, bolts, brackets, and metal rivets. Use of elevated work platforms required.
• Purchasing, estimating & scheduling and experience with Roof Wizard® and architectural take offs.
Essential functions, tasks, and duties
1. Study drawings to determine materials, erect equipment, secure waterproof sheets, underlay, and roofing materials;
2. Read and interpret plans and specifications and undertake required estimating & scheduling for roofing jobs and projects;
3. Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding and use PPP equipment at all times;
4. Use roof tiling tools and equipment including elevated work platforms;
5. Handle roof tiling and roof covering materials including timber, terracotta, ceramic and concrete tiles, and prefabricated metal residential/commercial/industrial roofing span materials including Lysaght® roofing & walling Colorbond® and Zincalume® steel roof sheeting and wall cladding;
6. Correctly space and fix battens across roof rafters on which roofing material will be placed;
7. As and when required, signal crane operator to lower prefabricated roofing components for installation and fixing;
8. Lay aluminium, steel or clay/cement, terracotta roof tiles or metal roof sheeting;
9. Construct and attach prefabricated roof sections to rafters;
10. Align, fit, and fasten roof onto roofing sub structures using hand tools and portable power tools, hoists or impact wrench and power tools where required;
11. Overlap successive layers of roof covering materials and measure and cut roofing material to fit around vents, edges and the hips and valleys of the roof;
12. Drill holes in roof and top plate and inserts pins preparatory to riveting/bolting;
13. Fix roof flashings including weatherproof coverings;
14. Fix roofing ridge caps and gable ends with cement mortar or tech screws;
15. Handle waterproofing materials, tools, and equipment;
16. Apply protective paint coating systems where required;
17. Slipping roofing material under prefabricated flashing and nailing down;
18. Install metal gutters, downpipes, and other rainwater management products/materials;
19. Caulking and flashing exposed nail heads to prevent leaks.
20. Clear the roof of debris when the job is finished nailing and stapling roofing underlay to roofs;
21. Disassembles and remove lifting components and parts and scaffolding using hand tools; and
22. Undertake training and development of apprentice(s) and junior trade employees.
Educational and training requirements
Qualification Program of Study Require/Preferred
Craft Certificate in Roofing or Roof Tiling/Slating/Fixing Apprenticeship or traineeship Preferred
Additional Training Requirements
If no formal qualification is held, a minimum of 3 years full time professional trade employment experience in Roofing, Single Ply Roofing or Roof Tiling/Fixing may substitute for the formal qualification.
Employment Experience Requirements
2 Years of Experience Preferred but not essential – Professional trade employment experience in Roofing or Roof Tiling/Fixing
