Primary purpose of the role
Manage and coordinate workplace safety and governance through the development of effective methodologies and implementation of frameworks and strategies to prevent workplace accident and injuries. Identifying, assessing, prioritising, and controlling health and safety risks, and ensuring that safe systems of work are developed, documented and followed by staff and contractors through appropriate training, supervision and monitoring. You will collaborate with business leaders and provide support and advise and pivot between the strategic and operational.
What you will lead and manage
Reporting to the General Manager, and managing a team of 5 direct reports, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of a systematic approach to safety that minimises risk of injury and ensures the organisation is compliant with regulatory requirements across the breadth of the business operations. You will drive and implement a positive safety culture to the wider project teams to ensure compliance with all legislative and client requirements at an organisational and project level. You will have the ability to audit and update policies and procedures, develop project specific safety, environment, and quality plans, consistently seeking to innovate and improve our systems.
Key accountabilities
- Manage safety and governance to achieve optimum results in workplace safety.
- Provide timely, professional, strategic, and comprehensive advice to senior management on workplace safety and governance data and trends.
- Manage, implement, maintain, and monitor processes that ensure preventative measures, avoid, minimise or transfer risk.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure clarity of roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities in the safety environment.
- Provide advice and recommendations to senior management on policy and operational matters including the impact of changes in legislation and/or regulation.
- Consider and recommend improvements in procedures and processes that are consistent with legislation, regulation and policy that improves service delivery in line with industry best practice.
- Identify and respond to emerging issues that may impact the various workplace environments that Vaughan is operating within.
Key challenges
- Maintain currency of knowledge of relevant legislation, regulation, policy, and procedures relating to safety and governance.
- Continually build and improve the HSEQ Management systems to meet and exceed legislative requirements.
- Manage and oversight complex issues around workplace safety and governance.
Skills and experience
- Relevant qualifications within the field of OHS, Quality management or engineering.
- ICAM Accreditation - Lead Investigator
- National diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (BSB51307)
- Solid experience (min 3yrs) working in a leadership role.
- Proven ability & experience in leading Safety in an operational environment, specifically including civils and infrastructure with a broad risk profile.
- Demonstrated ability to work with management and staff at all levels and to develop positive working relationships, engaging and collaborating to achieve outcomes and facilitate co-operation.
- Ability to inspire, influence and motivate whilst displaying advanced leadership skills.
- Experience in the development and implementation of and continuous improvement of WHS management systems, including the drafting of policies, procedures and associated documents and maintaining the system.
- Maintain Federal Safety accreditation and annual ISO audits.
- Strong technical knowledge of the regulatory environment with a practical approach to delivering strong safety outcomes.
- Change management experience with a focus on engagement of key stakeholders would be an advantage.
- Innovative approach and ability to prepare detailed submissions for management consideration.
- Experience in leading a team to deliver strong support to operational leadership.
- Strong communication and computer skills across the MS suite.
