12th January, 2024 About the Role The primary objective of the Senior Advocacy Officer is to provide individual advocacy, support, information and referral services to people with disability.
In particular, these individuals, their families and their carers will be from CaLD backgrounds and who are experiencing problems such as discrimination, abuse and barriers to accessing appropriate supports and services. The role will include advocacy support for CaLD clients accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme and is primarily focused on working collaboratively with the Individual Advocates and clients to provide advocacy support to individuals seeking to review and/or appeal NDIA decisions and guidance to staff providing NDIS appeals advocacy to clients. Key responsibilities include: Assist applicants to navigate the process of seeking AAT review of NDIA decisions, including preparing documents, attending conferences, conciliations and hearings.
Provide direction, support and guidance to Individual Advocates who are themselves providing assistance to applicants seeking AAT review of NDIA decisions. Represent the organisation at forums that relate to NDIA appeals to the AAT. Keep abreast of developments in the NDIA Appeals/Review processes and decisions made by the AAT and responsible for communicating developments to other staff.
Undertake high level individual advocacy on behalf of ELD people with disability, including psycho-social disability. Community Liaison with networks with relevant services and community groups and provide information on the needs of ELD people with disability and their families/carers. Undertake high level systemic disability advocacy on commonwealth related matters including formal responses to government reviews on issues impacting on ELD clients with disability

Key criteria: A high level of understanding of and commitment to working with people with disability, including people of ethno-culturally and linguistically diverse (ELD) backgrounds, their families and carers Knowledge and experience supporting clients with lodging appeals to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Sound client needs assessment and advocacy skills in casework practice
