About the College of Medicine and Public Health

About the Flinders Health and Medical Research Building
At the beginning of 2022, construction commenced on the $255 million Flinders Health and Medical Research Building (FHMRB). Due to open in the first quarter of 2024, the FHMRB will enable researchers, practitioners and industry partners to work together more closely than ever before, creating a hub of collaboration within southern Adelaide’s own biomedical research precinct. Located adjacent to Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital, it will be the focal point of research informed by genuine patient need, positioned to make an immediate improvement to people’s health and wellbeing.
About the Role
The Senior Animal Technical Officer will promote, develop, implement, coordinate, and undertake complex work within the Animal Facility. This includes innovative training, breeding programs, animal care and maintenance, technical procedures, animal ethics, hazard management and Legislative compliance. This role will be responsible for providing an ethical, professional, efficient service to researchers with the ability to adopt a solutions-based approach to business improvement. Out of hours work will be required.
About You
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
Maintenance of a barrier-controlled facility and to maintain inbred, out bred and genetically modified animal breeding programmes
Knowledge and experience with laboratory animal husbandry systems and techniques including the ability to recognise ill health in animal colonies and knowledge of disease problems characteristic of different species
Experience in a wide range of techniques including post operative, euthanasia, preparation and administering drugs, blood collection and a variety of injection techniques across a varying range of research animals
Familiarity with Work Health and Safety Legislation, Australian Code of Practices for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, Gene Technology Act and DAFF requirements
Ability to develop, implement and undertake efficient, innovative animal facility related training with a continuous improvement strategy.
