Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) is the Victorian Government's insurer and risk adviser, covering the people and projects that help Victorians thrive. We're an agency in the Department of Treasury and Finance portfolio, established under the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority Act, and report to the Assistant Treasurer.
We provide insurance and risk advice to government departments and agencies, with more than 4,600 clients, ranging from small community service organisations to public hospitals, schools, and core service providers. We also provide domestic building insurance to builders, giving Victorian homeowners peace of mind for building projects valued over $16,000.

Your role
As a Senior Claims Specialist, you are responsible for managing a discrete portfolio of claims (which includes managing abuse claims) that deliver client-focused solutions that build a more resilient Victoria.
You work with a team of Claims Specialists who provide best-practice strategic claims management. VMIA claims management is tailored to the public sector and focuses on efficient, fit-for-purpose solutions for our clients.
The Senior Claims Specialist also plays a key part in educating our clients and building their knowledge of emerging trends and strategies aimed at reducing the level and frequency of claims to heighten their risk management capability.
This role reports to the Liability Claims Portfolio Manager and sits within the Risk, Insurance and Claims Solutions Division.
What you do

  • You manage a discrete portfolio of claims, including significant and strategic claims for our clients by applying best practice public sector claims management across a range of matters to minimise disruption to client operations and ensure compliance with VMIA claims management processes, practices, and delegations.
  • You build and forge strong client relationships to positively influence the resolution of claims and ensure client participation throughout the claims management process ensuring an appropriate balance between client and VMIA interests and needs at all times.
  • You build effective relationships with key legal advisors and/or insurance providers to achieve optimum claims resolution.
  • You work in partnership with appointed legal service providers in all aspects of negotiation, mediation, and litigation to manage liabilities and resolve claims in consultation with VMIA clients.
  • You strategically engage other specialist third-party providers to support the claims management process.
  • You work with the Insights team to support the analysis of claims data and portfolio trends.
  • You liaise across Divisions and with external partners (mainly legal and actuarial) to monitor the impacts of claims settlements on the financial sustainability of the program.
  • You collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to meet the strategic claims management needs of our clients.
Who you work with
  • You work collegially with your peers across the Risk, Insurance, and Claims Solutions Division and the broader organisation to design, develop and implement key Insurance Services programs and initiatives.
  • You communicate and consult regularly with the Risk, Insights, and Products and Service teams to inform trends, market needs, changes, and new opportunities for initiatives.
  • You may provide occasional information and updates directly to the Executive and Board. You may also present on strategic programs or initiatives related to clients or sectors from time to time. This will be with support and direction from your manager.
About you
  • 5 plus years experience in a liability claims management role with an insurer or law firm
  • Proven experience in handling complex matters including indemnity issues and litigation, across the public and products liability, professional indemnity, and directors' and officers' classes of business. Experience in managing abuse claims would also be advantageous.
  • You are a seasoned professional with highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, proven client relationship management experience, and the ability to influence stakeholders and negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • You have knowledge and experience in insurance claims management along with the capacity to analyse and interpret claims information and data sources. You can demonstrate how you have used this intel to identify trends and strategic opportunities for improvement.
  • You have demonstrated the capability to manage the performance of claims service providers to ensure that agreed service standards and fees are maintained.
  • Demonstrated experience in positively coaching a team, influencing outcomes, and re-engineering business processes to ensure optimal performance.
  • A comprehensive and expert knowledge of claims management issues, challenges, and directions, with broad experience in implementing and reviewing risk and insurance policies, programs, and products.
  • An understanding of the complexities and nuances of public sector management, with the capacity to operate successfully in such an environment.
