Job description

Overview

Microsoft Azure organization offers a terrific opportunity for technical enrichment and career growth. As part of Microsoft Azure, the Azure Networking team designs and builds the network infrastructure that powers hundreds of thousands of servers in datacenters around the globe, providing core network infrastructure services for Azure, Bing, and other Microsoft cloud services. In Azure Networking, we are at the very front of Cloud Computing by running one of the largest data center networks in the world.

As a Senior Cloud Network Engineer in Azure Networking, you will gain marketable experience in massive scale data center network architecture design, network infrastructure automatic management, software defined networking and high scalable/available/reliable distributed service design/implementation.

You would start working with existing service teams, IPAM (IP Address Management) or Metadata, which are based in China to collaborate with and gain deep domain knowledge. The IPAM and Metadata systems track every IP address and network port owned by Microsoft, and data-validation ensures correctness. All our network management tooling, from quality control to alerting to configuration management, is driven from an authoritative description of what our network should be and what types of routers/switches, how they are connected, and details such as what IP addresses and features are configured on them.

This work opportunity is fully working from home in the Australian east coast.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a scenario.
  • Drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Leads design, network/code and security reviews across teams to identify risks and prevent classes of bugs prior to production release by applying expertise in network implementation, available technologies, analysis of telemetry pipelines, and root cause analysis, as well as best practices in identifying and implementing solutions. Articulates the customer impact of design trade-offs and exceptions and identifies capabilities and limitations of existing tools and resources to ensure they can support design implementation and verification.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
  • Influences telemetry analytics designs to better identify patterns that reveal errors and unexpected problems; leverages an understanding of network architectures and infrastructure at scale to develop, measure, track, and improve the quality of telemetry pipelines that support automated monitoring and incident response.
  • Triages, troubleshoots, and repairs complex live site issues by applying expertise in physical network components and features (e.g., device operating systems), problem management tools (e.g., root cause analysis, trend analysis, post-mortems, repair items), and/or low-level Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and register sets, to diagnose and address problems using automated, long-term, and sustainable solutions with minimal or no disruption to customers. Participates in on-call/DRI duties to resolve incidents in production and provides guidance to other engineers on triage, troubleshooting, and resolution processes.
  • Develops and implements reliable automation tools and services that increase engineering efficiency, reduce operational burden, and reduce human errors in production, while making optimal use of infrastructure and resources by automating tasks; uses and identifies opportunities to improve existing automation to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and support sustainable network operations at scale across teams.
