Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, Senior Legal Counsel are responsible for the provision of advice and legal assistance across our broad and complex risk portfolios.
About the Role
With significant growth in our consumer base, and increasing complexity in our operating environment, the work of our Legal team is increasingly important in providing a consistently safe environment for our people, patients and visitors alike.
We are now seeking a highly motivated, experienced legal professional to join our corporate legal team in a full time, fixed term position for approximately twelve (12) months. This role is based at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, you will provide professional legal advice and services across a wide range of operational and strategic issues across Monash Health. Some examples include:
- Negotiating, drafting and settling major contracts including procurement/vendor agreements, government services contracts and other external arrangements;
- Advising and supporting staff in preparing statements relating to serious complaints, civil (public liability and medical litigation), coroner's cases, VCAT actions and other legal proceedings;
- Assisting the Chief Legal Officer to prepare reports and advice to the Chief Executive on current major legal matters and areas of potential exposure;
- Contributing to the development and maintenance of policies applicable to legal risk management, patient rights, quality improvement, incident reporting, health information services and other matters relevant to the operation of a major public health service; and
- Ensuring that Monash Health is compliant with all legal and legislative requirements.
Your qualifications, experience and expertise:
- You have demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and to provide legal advice on a broad range of operational and strategic issues. You are comfortable working in a complex environment and you can effectively triage urgent matters.
- You have expertise across a broad range of specialty areas but have particular expertise in corporate transactions and commercial law (IT, procurement, Intellectual Property etc).
- Knowledge of the legal framework of the Public Health sector and understanding of the social, ethical and financial issues associated with the delivery of public health services is highly desirable. Your proven ability to establish, develop and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders will be key to success in this role.
- You hold a current practising certificate as an Australian Legal Practitioner, issued by the Legal Services Board of Victoria and you are admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
- A current motor vehicle Driver's Licence is preferred as the role may require some travel between Monash Health sites.
