  • APS5 Level: $78,928 - $88,655; APS6 Level: $88,655 - $100,130 (plus 15.4% superannuation and allowances)
  • Locations: Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth will be considered
  • Permanent, full-time or part-time role (flexible working arrangements)
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to recruit Senior Data Output Officers, Senior Data Consultants, Data Output Managers and Manager, Consultant Analysts (APS5 and APS6) in our Digital Services Branch. Our objective is to create a merit pool of suitable candidates to support current and expected vacancies across DSB.
The successful applicants can work out of either of our offices located in Belconnen (Canberra), Sydney, Docklands (Melbourne) and Perth, although flexible working arrangements (including a hybrid model of working from home and the office) apply.
About the business area
The Digital Services Branch provides leadership across various digital products and services to deliver value to customers, stakeholders and the organisation. The branch provides leadership, policies and best practices to ensure digital products and services are user-centric, secure, accessible, robust and efficient.
We work in collaboration with sections across the organisation, and the wider APS, to ensure alignment with whole of government approaches. The branch looks to innovate the way ABS content is to be delivered to ensure our ongoing relevance and to maximise the impact of the ABS on important decisions in Australia.
The branch has the operational responsibility for the ABS website, APIs, information warehouse as well as microdata products such as TableBuilder and DataLab.
There are opportunities for the ABS to do more with the right people, which is why we need people with good communication skills, sound judgement, a drive to learn and try new things, and desire to innovate through collaboration. We are looking to fill several roles in various teams across the branch that support the Dissemination of data through various Digital Services.
Microdata Resources (Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth)
Provides technical and administrative services to enable effective and safe access to and release of microdata (de-identified unit record information) through various channels including, registration systems and Microdata Access Platforms. We develop strategies and manage processes to ensure confidentiality and compliance with the Five Safes approach which was adopted by the ABS to manage disclosure risk appropriate to the intended use. The section has a strong customer focus, servicing both internal and external customers throughout their microdata journey (registration, access, and output).
Consultancy Services (Sydney or Melbourne)
The section connects customers to data. They are highly responsive to stakeholders, including the Australian public, seeking to ensure that their customers have effective and safe access to a wide range of data and statistics. They collaborate across their networks within the ABS and externally to address their customers’ needs, by releasing high quality customised aggregate data. Data Consultants may specialise in a particular subject matter area (e.g. Census of Population and Housing; Trade Statistics, integrated data) or may work across a wide range of ABS data.
About the roles
We currently have vacancies in the following sections:
Senior Data Output Officers (APS5) - Microdata Resources Section
Responsibilities may include:
  • Understand research analyses generated in DataLab by government or academic researchers using a wide range of data (personal, business, administrative, survey). Assess the disclosure risk (risk that information, if released, can re-identify an individual, household or organisation) of those research outputs, and advise researchers on appropriate controls to mitigate the risk.
  • Deliver a responsive customer service through exemplary critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Work within a team to anticipate and analyse emerging data trends that present risks to protecting microdata, and form conclusions on how the ABS should respond.
  • Communicate findings, using judgement and real-world insights.
  • Work with internal and external clients to build knowledge of safe data practices (potentially including delivery of external training).
  • Provide confidentiality advice and guidance to other areas in the ABS.
Data Output Managers (APS6) - Microdata Resources Section
In addition to the above, Managers responsibilities may include:
  • Provide organisational leadership in microdata confidentiality.
  • Lead a high performing team of Senior Data Output Officers that identifies and analyses emerging data trends that present risks to protecting microdata, and make recommendations on how the ABS should respond.
Senior Data Consultants (APS5) - Consultancy Services Section
Responsibilities of a Senior Data Consultant include:
  • Engaging with customers to understand the purpose of their data request and the outcomes they hope to achieve.
  • Clearly defining and specifying the data needs of customers.
  • Assessing the viability of consultancies and quoting for the service.
  • Extracting, confidentialising and validating data and analytical content.
  • Engaging with customers to ensure their needs have been met.
Manager, Consultant Analysts (APS6) - Consultancy Services Section
In addition to the above, Managers responsibilities may include:
  • Managing and developing a small team of consultants.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships both internal and external.
What we are looking for (selection criteria)
You will need to demonstrate your capabilities against the / Integrated Leadership System profile (please refer to the links for details on expectations at these levels) areas of:

  • Communicates with influence.
  • Relevant work experience in a data or statistical role.
  • Experience with or the ability to learn one or more statistical programming languages such as Python, R, SAS or SQL.
  • Project management skills and the ability to deliver quality outcomes within a dynamic and complex environment.
  • Analytical and conceptual skills, with the ability to problem solve and make decisions based on analytical evidence,
  • Academic qualifications in a field with a strong quantitative component is highly desirable.
For APS6 we also require the following skills:
  • Leadership of, and managing a high performance team.
  • Stronger experience of analytical and conceptual skills, with the ability to problem solve and make decisions based on analytical evidence.
