Stepping into the heart of the NSW Government

You will have an invaluable opportunity to create a positive impact for the people of New South Wales. You will be challenged to provide the best outcomes possible in this role while developing and growing your own skills.

When you join Treasury, you join an organisation that is a whole-of-government financial and economic advisor. Treasury is a critical component of the government and provides advice that informs a wide range of financial, economic and policy driven work for the state of NSW.

We consider work-life balance a key feature of being employed here. You will have the flexibility to manage your work schedule around times that best suit your life outside of the workplace and in line with organisational needs.

Enrich your career with the NSW Treasury

While we are certain your existing expertise will ensure success in this role, enjoy continuous learning and improve your skills in core areas, including:

  • providing high-quality analysis on developments in the economy, and leading the development and implementation of forecasts and analytical insights
  • developing and maintaining modelling approaches underpinning projections, reporting and strategic advice
  • developing and driving the delivery of the broader goals of the team, Group and NSW Treasury.

You will join our Macroeconomic Analysis, Research and Strategy Branch (MARS) Team and will be working within the Economic Strategy & Productivity. Read more about your future Group and Division.

The Senior Economist role will provide you with the opportunity to expand your network as you will have the chance to work with multiple teams, agencies, external stakeholders, and organisations to help shape your career.

NSW Treasury is committed to growing and developing our people and believe that learning should never stop.

We are always on the lookout for candidates who can bring unique perspectives that reflect New South Wales communities and ensure the delivery of excellent public service for the people of our state.

Your day as a Senior Economist

Your typical day-to-day work includes leading the delivery of high-quality analysis, research and modelling to support government decision making and policy development. Your core role will include leading the development of macroeconomic forecasting models, data analysis and reporting, and conducting research into areas of interest pertaining to the economy, especially in relation to key priority areas for Government, and stakeholder engagement.

This position sits in the  Macroeconomic Analysis, Research and Strategy (MARS) Team which is the principal macroeconomic forecasting and analysis team within NSW Treasury. The branch has primary responsibility for generating forecasts of prospective economic conditions which underpin the Budget fiscal estimates. It is also responsible for providing high quality analysis, strategy and advice on developments in the macroeconomy to help inform and influence the policy landscape.

This role liaises with other areas within Treasury, with NSW government agencies and equivalents in other jurisdictions across Australia, and with external stakeholders.

Achieve success as Senior Economist

In this integral role there are a few things we would like for you to have to best support yourself and add value to the people of NSW.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Economics and/or experience in a relevant field (particularly econometrics and statistics).
  • A track record of delivering quantitative analysis involving economic modelling and data analysis in a complex environment.
  • Experience in analysing, forecasting and reporting on developments in the Australian or NSW economies by extracting insights from domestic and international macroeconomic data sources (e.g. ABS, RBA, Government budget papers, IMF)
  • Ability to build models and/or apply critical perspectives across diverse policy issues to support economic forecasts and/or policy advice.
  • Advanced capability in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and econometric software (Eviews, R or similar)

We are also committed to providing you with access to learning and development programs to help you achieve your performance objectives and career goals. Read more about how we invest in you.
