Mining, Exploration and Geoscience (MEG) – part of the Department of Regional NSW – are looking for Senior Resource Economists to join the team.
As a Senior Resource Economist in the Resource Economics Team, you will play a critical role in policy, data management, governance and reporting for the NSW Mineral Royalty Scheme (did you know that mining royalties were nearly $4.8 billion in 2022-23 and they made up nearly 6 per of Government Revenue?).
The team also supports the broader MEG division, Industry, and other government stakeholders through the provision of economic advice and forecasting, advice on the royalty scheme, and with a regular schedule of analytical products. You will also have responsibility for supporting the Division to make the most of royalty data and our analytical products by helping them access, understand, and use the information they need.
Our work is varied — examples include advice on the development of the critical minerals industry, the current operation and future of the coal industry, and assessment of mine development applications. Some tasks need to be completed urgently, other tasks have more flexible deadlines, but we are output focused and take flexibility and work life balance seriously.
Candidates with prior experience across government, research or consultancy would be suited to the role and would have opportunities to apply and refine their skills across the following main areas:
drafting, interpreting, and advising on legislation
industry stakeholder management and consultation
advising departmental stakeholders, ministers, and other government agencies
research and analysis of emerging issues
database management and governance
People who are comfortable using numbers, legislation, and policy to inform rigorous analysis, but who can also be pragmatic in the delivery of high-quality outcomes within resource constraints would enjoy this role.
Mining can be contentious, but it’s critical to everything we do. There’s rarely a dull moment – so come and join our team!
Essential requirements
Tertiary qualifications in economics, mining, science or related field, or equivalent experience
Sound understanding of the issues confronting the mining and exploration industry locally, nationally, and internationally.
Compliance with pre-employment probity screening is mandatory and a condition of engagement.
