Senior Economist/Data Scientist/Analyst

  • Salary: $106,534 - $128,897 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Fixed term until 31 January 2025
  • Usual hours of work: Full time (flexibility may be available)
  • Usual work location: Melbourne CBD (flexibility may be available)
The Role
The Senior Economist/Data Scientist/Analyst will lead economic and statistical analysis to inform big picture policy reform opportunities. They will develop clear and compelling evidence-based recommendations for a broad range of policy issues affecting Victorian communities and businesses. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated record in developing statistical and mathematical models to inform and evaluate government policy/projects to inform decision makers and will have some experience with relevant programming software such as Stata, R, Python or equivalent.
The Team
The position of Senior Economist / Data Scientist / Analyst forms a part of the Economic Policy, Projects and Coordination Group.
The Economic Policy, Projects and Coordination group brings together specialist skills in economics, modelling, data and evaluation to support all groups across the department to deliver on their priorities. The group's service offering includes strategy and policy advice, data and analytics, and policy and program evaluation.
About You
  • Conceptual and analytical ability: Demonstrated expertise in conceptual thinking and sound analytical approaches to support decision making in the work area.
  • Statistical analysis: Demonstrated technical expertise in data manipulation and statistical analysis.
  • Policy analysis: Demonstrated experience in analysing government policy using conceptual frameworks.
  • Project management: Demonstrated ability to lead projects, including establishing the scope, planning an approach and driving outputs with little supervision.
  • Self development: Ability to develop technical expertise by identifying new analytical approaches and developing capability in these approaches through self-learning by relying on publicly available materials.
  • Initiative and Accountability: Proactive and self-starting. Seizes opportunities and acts upon them.
