Job description

Senior Engineer - Power Systems (10975)
AEMO?
We are the Australian Energy Market Operator. AEMO’s role is to design and operate a sustainable energy system that provides safe, reliable, and affordable electricity and gas today, and to enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. All Australian governments are now committed to a net-zero economy for Australia by 2050, the first step of which is a net-zero energy system. We are collaborating with the industry and other stakeholders to engineer electricity grids that can handle 100 per cent instantaneous renewable generation by 2025.
As the transition to a renewable energy system is occurring at a world-leading pace, it is an exciting & momentous time to be a part of this mission.
About the Team & the Position
Victorian Planning is a division within the System Design department which is focused on efficient planning and development of the Victorian Electricity Transmission Network.
Victorian System Integration is a team of engineers responsible for delivering quality network planning analysis and technical advisory services for the Victorian Declared Shared Network to ensure that the investment needed as the power system transitions to achieve net zero emissions can be reliably and securely integrated in the existing network.
Position Responsibilities
•Coach or direct junior staff on network analysis functions to deliver high quality outcomes - including necessary peer review and technical support.
•Lead, supervise and review analysis of the Victorian transmission network using specialised computer simulation tools including PSSE and PSCAD to assess the network need for remedial action or special protection schemes.
•Interpret and justify simulation outcomes, draw conclusions, and provide robust recommendations on network augmentation impacts on the system.
•Review, manage and approve inter-network testing and project commissioning plans to achieve augmentation capacity release.
•Communicating recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in support of transmission system integration.
•Prepare clear, concise and high quality written and verbal communication, including reports, system operation planning advice, stakeholder presentations, information packs and briefing papers.
•Work effectively across multiple concurrent projects, with changing external pressures and priorities, highlighting associated risks to senior staff, management and stakeholders.
•Proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging across teams, and communicate AEMO position on planning and system integration related matters.
Position Requirements
Skills & Experience
•Good understanding of the role of AEMO, particularly its Victorian Planning functions including the National Electricity Market, National Electricity Rules and National Electricity Law in relation to Victorian Planning
•Industry or related experience in electricity transmission network planning and system integration, encompassing experience in remedial action scheme design, short, medium and long-term planning and inter-network testing.
•Demonstrated proficiency in using electricity network analysis tools or relevant software (such as PSS/E, PowerFactory or PSCAD) and the interpretation of analysis performed by others.
•Demonstrated proficiency in programming, particularly for remedial action scheme model development, in languages such as Python and Fortran in association with PSSE applications.
•Demonstrated experience in leading work packages and leveraging junior staff to achieve timely delivery of specified outcomes.
•Understanding of cost benefit assessment of projects including probability-based analysis of investment decisions.
•Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to negotiate with and make recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
•Ability to prepare high quality reports suitable for senior management and external stakeholders.
Education/ professional Certifications:
•Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering with a discipline relevant to Power Systems and at least 7 years of relevant post- graduate experience
