The NSW Resources Regulator (part of the Mining, Exploration & Geoscience group) are looking for a Senior Investigator to join the team.
About the role:
As the Senior Investigator you will be part of a team consisting of compliance and environmental professionals to deliver regulatory activities and actions in relation to industry compliance with the Mining Act 1992. These activities include,
- Undertaking rigorous and defensible investigations as an authorised Inspector to ensure industry compliance with Mining Act and associated Regulations,
- Leading and conducting proactive and targeted compliance operations to achieve compliance objectives,
- Preparing, reviewing and presenting defensible evidence, reports and submissions to make appropriate recommendations in accordance with legislative requirements and regulations and delegated authorities and disciplinary action in courts and tribunals holding competent jurisdiction and present evidence before courts and tribunals.
- Contribute to team functions and joint investigations and participate on project teams to assist with the consideration, development and implementation of specific enforcement policies and strategies to achieve defined outcomes and operational and strategic aims.
- Undertake statutory functions as an authorised Inspector to enforce regulatory obligations and compliance with conditions of title and the relevant Acts and directing titleholders to implement corrective actions that may result from assessment reports or inspections of the site in a timely manner.
- Take steps to ensure policies, programs and legislative requirements are interpreted and implemented consistently through sharing knowledge to contribute to the overall transfer of specialist knowledge and skills in investigative techniques.
- Report on compliance enforcement activities and recommend improvements to processes, standards or industry practices.
- Resource information and maintain currency in understanding of compliance and enforcement matters and promote best practice through consultation with Departmental staff, industry representatives, government agencies and research bodies.
About You:
You will exercise statutory functions and powers of the Mining Act 1992 and the Petroleum (Onshore) Act 1991 and related regulations. To be successful you will need to have:
- Understanding and experience in managing compliance and enforcement activities, preferably in Government regulation in mining or a natural resource or environmental management context.
- Capacity to undertake investigations and extensive experience in interviewing witnesses and suspects and in applying knowledge of investigative methodologies, rules of evidence and court procedures.
Essential requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in one or more of the following areas: environmental science, science, law or forensics (or equivalent).
- Ability and willingness to travel interstate at short notice.
- Hold and maintain a current Class C driver licence.
- Compliance with pre-employment probity screening is mandatory and a condition of engagement. Compliance with the Resources Regulator Pecuniary Interests in the Regulated Sector policy is mandatory.
- Appointment and ongoing assignment is subject to the satisfactory participation in ongoing health screening.
