  • 12-month contract role, flexible location Brisbane or Sydney.

We are seeking a Senior Lawyer to join our Corporate Legal Advisory team. The successful candidate will support a broad range of areas within Suncorp and provides legal advice on M&A (and divestment) activity, head office advisory, investments, group capital activities, real estate and general commercial agreements including outsourcing, procurement, technology and partnering.

This is a role where you can positively contribute towards providing commercially astute legal and strategic advice to our key internal clients and focus on results instead of billables. Our preference is to fill this role with a Senior Lawyer of 6+ years’ experience, with applicants of 6+ years of relevant experience also welcome to apply.

What you’ll do

Reporting to the Manager, Legal, your key accountabilities will include:

  • Act as a point of technical escalation for the majority of matters in your functional areas.
  • Actively identify matters which have the potential to significantly impact the Group’s interests and ensure appropriate escalation of such matters.
  • Provide, and supervise the provision of, expert legal advice to your functional areas which protects the interests of the Group, its Directors and Officers and that is consistent with the relevant Risk Appetite statement.
  • Actively promote a ‘one team’ approach across the Legal & Secretariat function.
  • Operate autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Provide supervision and oversight of lawyers in the Corporate Advisory team on technical matters to develop and grow capability and minimise risk.
  • Being fiscally responsible including through appropriate management (and minimisation) of external legal spend.
  • Operate within relevant approved Risk Appetite Statement/s including complying with all laws, regulations and policies.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law – Mandatory.
  • Current Practicing Certificate – Mandatory.
  • Admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in any Australian Court – Mandatory.
  • Relevant legal experience at a lawyer level – Mandatory.
  • Minimum 6+ years previous relevant legal experience - Mandatory
  • Of which, minimum 3+ years financial services experience - Mandatory
  • Experience in a major law firm and/or as in-house counsel, preferably in an insurance environment – Desired
  • Strong drafting, advisory and negotiation experience with software/technology and commercial supply agreements – Desired
  • Experience advising on professional indemnity claims and/or regulatory issues – Highly regarded.
  • Ability to provide high quality legal services.
  • Ability to handle complexity and uncertainty.
  • Strong customer service and relationship management focus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
