Job description

About Moray & Agnew

Moray & Agnew is one of Australia’s leading law firms, combining our heritage brand with innovative best practice to provide specialised commercial, workplace and insurance legal services. Our 650+ staff work with domestic and international clients from our offices in Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth.

Built on a solid history in insurance law, client demand has guided our exceptional growth into:

  • Commercial law – construction & projects, corporate & commercial, property & development, planning & environment, and commercial litigation & dispute resolution
  • Workplace law – employment, industrial relations, work health & safety, and litigation & dispute resolution
  • Insurance law – including litigation, advocacy and dispute resolution on behalf of major insurer clients, in the areas of Workers Compensation, public liability, professional indemnity, directors and officers, catastrophic claims and compulsory third party

We have been formally recognised by Lawyers Weekly as one of the 25 most attractive firms to work at in Australia. Best Lawyers 2022 ® awarded us Law Firm of the Year for our expertise in Insurance Law and we are rated strongly by clients and peers in the Chambers and Legal 500 legal directories.

The core of our national commercial practice is centred in Newcastle where we have more than 130 staff, making Moray & Agnew the best resourced commercial and insurance legal practice in the Hunter region.

About the role

With ongoing growth in the firm, an opportunity has arisen in our vibrant Newcastle Workers’ Compensation team for a senior lawyer with a minimum of 5+ years of post-admission experience, preferably at Senior Associate or Special Counsel level.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work closely with partners and senior lawyers who are industry acknowledged experts in this area. With clients including NSW Government agencies, private sector employers and their insurers, this role will see you involved with some of the most complicated and sensitive claims, including those with media interest, catastrophic injuries and multi-party common law matters.

The partners are looking forward to introducing another experienced senior lawyer into the busy team, so if continued career progression and mentorship are important to you, this could be the perfect opportunity.

About you

Whilst Defendant Workers’ Compensation experience will be highly regarded, candidates with in-house, insurer or applicant experience are encouraged to apply. The skills we are looking for include:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication
  • Meticulous attention to detail, with a client focus
  • The ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Self-confidence, initiative and good judgement

Culture & benefits of working with us

We celebrate diverse thinking and experiences. We encourage our employees to bring their true and authentic self to the workplace. To help support you in achieving this, we offer our employees a wide range of benefits and we are confident that you will find something to love at Morays:

  • Flexible working arrangements to help you balance your work and personal commitments.
  • Dress for your day because we trust our employees to make choices which appropriately represent the firm.
  • Continuous learning and development programs to ensure that you are always being challenged, engaged and encouraged to grow.
  • Health and wellness initiatives, including an Employee Assistance Program for yourself and your family, and corporate discounts at over 400 leading fitness and wellbeing brands across Australia.
  • Paid parental leave policy, and in addition, we are now accredited as a Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace.
  • Mentoring program to support your professional development.
  • Diversity, inclusion and equality – we have a comprehensive Diversity and Inclusion policy, and a number of employee reference groups (LGBTIQA+, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Gender, Parents & Caregivers, Mature Workers, and Health & Wellbeing) to ensure that the firm continues to live its values.
