Your Opportunity

As a Senior Lecturer in TAFE Queensland, you will be responsible for course and/or unit coordination and teaching, including the development of curriculum materials and/or scholarly activity.

You will be responsible for leading a team of academics in the delivery of an applied learning model of Higher Education in TAFE Queensland.

As an academic at this level, you are expected to lead significant debate related to your discipline area and educational philosophy and contribute to your discipline at a national level.

You will also lead engagement with industry, ensuring support for the promotion of TAFE Queensland’s applied learning philosophy.

This position reports to the relevant Discipline Group Manager.

There are multiple Temporary Full-Time opportunities up to 6 months duration with possibility for extension.

The position will be based primarily at South Bank however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Make significant contributions to the leadership of the teaching effort of a discipline/course or other organisational area or to an interdisciplinary area, including the programming of courses and preparation of delivery timetables. 
  • Undertake scholarship, research and/or professional activity related to the discipline and to learning and teaching.
  • Ensure compliance with TAFE Queensland and partner University systems and processes to document, evidence and report scholarly activity within expected timeframes.
  • Develop course material and, where required, contribute to, coordinate or manage overall course coordination in a discipline.
  • Initiate formal and informal interactions with students and staff across the Campus, industrial and commercial organisations, professional groups and community/individual organisations. Formal interactions are those which are commercial in nature and must be sanctioned by the relevant head of the organisational unit through the Dean/Head as appropriate.
  • Supervise/coordinate the work of other academic staff, if required by the head of the organisational unit.
  • Perform assigned teaching and learning duties with students on and off campus with a standard of planning, preparations, presentation and assessment as necessary to achieve unit and course learning outcomes.
  • Critically evaluate, where required, the operation of the teaching program and communicate such evaluations to the relevant Dean/Head as appropriate.
  • Prepare and deliver/conduct lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • Initiate and develop unit material.
  • Undertake marking and assessment, including the appropriate consultation with students.
  • Teach into Vocational Education and Training courses, where qualification and skills requirements are met.
  • Undertake broad administrative functions and attend and actively participate at organisational unit or course meetings with a role in planning or committee work.
  • Attend or coordinate activities which support student recruitment.
  • Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Safety First, Working Together, Focussing on Our Customer, Showing Initiative and Taking Responsibility. 

How you will be assessed

Within the context of the role description above, the ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

  • Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership at a course/program level and lead a high performing team of academics.
  • Proven ability to develop innovative approaches to learning and teaching within an applied learning environment and encouraging students to apply that learning in industry settings.
  • The ability to lead high quality course delivery within an applied learning environment, in accordance with Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) standards, with a demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding client service.
  • Demonstrated record of achievement as a leading practitioner with a reputation for skills, knowledge and expertise at a national level.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, as well as superior negotiation, influencing and listening skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and sustain productive internal and external stakeholder relationships with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Mandatory Qualifications/Requirements

a. Vocational competencies at least to the level being delivered and assessed;

  • Possession of a doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline being delivered; and/or
  • Recognised equivalent relevant academic or professional or practice-based experience and expertise, except for staff supervising doctoral degrees having a doctoral degree or equivalent research experience; and
  • Knowledge of contemporary developments in a discipline or field, which is informed by continuing scholarship or research or advances in practice; and
  • Skills in contemporary teaching, learning and assessment principles relevant to a discipline, the role, and modes of delivery and the needs of particular student cohorts.

b. Possession of one of the following training and assessment credentials: 

  • Level 7 qualification and current registration to practice within the relevant profession plus either 3 years relevant professional experience in the last 5 years OR enrolment in a relevant level 9 (masters) course, plus some relevant professional experience, together totalling 3 years.

c.  Current industry skills directly relevant to the training and assessment being provided;

d. Current knowledge and skills in vocational training and learning that informs the training and assessment provided;

e. Evidence of undertaking professional development in the fields of the knowledge and practice of vocational training, learning and assessment including competency-based training and assessment.

Note: Proof of qualifications and industry currency/experience to be provided at interview.

Highly Desirable Requirements

  • Experience leading academic teams in a discipline/course or other organisational area or to an interdisciplinary area, including the programming of courses and preparation of delivery timetables. 
  • Knowledge of contemporary developments in a discipline or field, which is informed by continuing scholarship or research or advances in practice; and
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment;
  • Higher-level qualification in adult education (approved by TAFE Queensland).
  • Current knowledge and skills in vocational training and learning that informs the training and assessment provided;
  • Current evidence of undertaking professional development in the fields of the knowledge and practice of vocational training, learning and assessment including competency-based training and assessment.
