Job description:

AI @ Australian Unity

The primary objective of this role is to serve as a pioneering member of Australian Unity's newly established AI & Machine Learning team. Initially, the focus will be on developing Generative AI use cases, followed by more complex Machine Learning projects as Australian Unity's AI capabilities mature. This role is not just about building AI projects; it will also entail constructing the foundational tech stack and processes to accelerate innovation and delivery within the team. Engaging with various teams and stakeholders, understanding business requirements, and taking initiative will also be key elements of this position.

This is a very exciting role for the business as the contributions made in this role will set the stage for Australian Unity's future in AI, bridging the gap between innovative technology and business needs, thereby realizing the vision of shaping Australian Unity into an organization where the outputs are freed from human limitations.

What you will do

• Drive the execution of AI projects from conceptualization to deployment, focusing initially on Generative AI and other high-impact opportunities, and evolving into more complex AI/ML projects as capabilities mature.
• Design and implement the foundational tech stack, including computational resources, data management tools, development environments, deployment and monitoring platforms, integration components, a library of standardized AI system sub-modules, and AI development best practices for future team members to follow.
• Contribute to the design, implementation, and refinement of comprehensive AI innovation and governance processes, including, but not limited to processes for: fostering AI literacy and awareness, identifying impactful use cases, ensuring alignment with business needs, establishing sound ROI metrics, and promoting responsible AI practices.
• Take the lead in defining standardized design patterns and creating a library of reusable and generalized modules. These building blocks enable the efficient assembly of new AI projects, streamlining the development process and minimizing redundant efforts.
• Create a scalable and robust environment specifically tailored to support AI and Machine Learning development, facilitating the acceleration of progress in AI initiatives within Australian Unity.
• Foster compatibility with future technological innovations (especially fast advancing AI technologies) and maintain an infrastructure that encourages continuous innovation, efficiency, and collaboration across AI projects.
• Act as a bridge between technological innovation and business needs, ensuring effective alignment and successful translation of business needs and technological innovation into practical and measurably useful AI/ML solutions.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI and Machine Learning technologies, tools, and techniques.

About you

This position requires a robust background in full-stack software engineering, complemented by hands-on experience in Machine Learning and Generative AI systems. You possess a pragmatic, outcome-driven mindset, prioritizing solutions that deliver clear business value over purely technical or academic interests. You are a quick learner with a profound interest in AI and the flexibility to adapt to various roles and responsibilities.

What will also stand out:

• Ability to wear multiple hats, adapting to various roles and responsibilities beyond coding as needed, to effectively drive business outcomes (Start-up or similar experience demonstrating ability to wear multiple hats and work in a dynamic environment, whether as an employee or a founder), will be highly regarded.
• Profound passion for AI and Machine Learning driven technological innovation, particularly in Generative AI
• Hands-on commercial experience with building and deploying production AI/ML systems.
• Experience with MLOps / AIOps / LLMOps practices, including model development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Strong knowledge of Machine Learning algorithms and techniques, with an ability to select and implement the right models for various applications.
• Proven ability to set up CI/CD pipelines.
• Proficiency with modern programming languages and frameworks suitable for AI and Machine Learning development (e.g., Python, LangChain, AutoGen, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
• Familiarity with cloud platforms and containerization technologies (e.g., AWS, Docker).
• Proven ability to work collaboratively across various teams, translating technical complexities to various stakeholders
