Purpose

  • Leads and oversees Global Wholesale Operations and Finance departments in Australia ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed/ delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
  • Assist with the development of priorities, business plans, and objectives for BNS Australia Branch (the “Branch”); set priorities to manage activities and tasks that are distributed between onshore and offshore resources.
  • Maintain oversight and responsibility for the operational risk and workflow, financial and regulatory reporting, and Corporate and Branch taxation requirements; expected to partner closely with both onshore and offshore resources for delivery of results and execution of day-to-day activities.
  • Ensure operational governance is consistent with Australian regulatory requirements; point of contact for local regulators for regulatory reporting and Branch operational issues.
  • Assist CEO in preparation of Branch business plans and forecasts as well as any requirements facilitating Branch expansion either through breadth of product offering or increased volumes.
  • Provide strategic and proactive leadership in managing the overall operational activities of multiple business lines (i.e. Corporate Banking, Capital Markets and Treasury) to achieve optimal productivity.
  • Identify and resolve complex/multi-faceted issues; primary contact point for escalation of operational concerns that impact delivery of customer service; consider dynamic variables when identifying the best course of action to meet deliverables; coordinate and manage internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Anticipate business changes and customer needs through proactive contribution and regular dialogue in management committee meetings; recommend solutions and develop improved initiatives and/or processes to ensure client needs are met in a timely and professional manner, while adhering to the Bank's established and prescribed standards.
  • Ensure operations and premises conform to Bank policies / procedures and established regulations, including those enforced by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA).
  • Actively participate as a key member of the Branch management committee, which will require quarterly presentations and potential follow-on analysis.
  • Understand the Bank's risk appetite framework and risk culture and ensure day-to-day activities and decisions conform to these standards.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Build a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
  • Coordinate and lead Service Management oversight forum for outsourced functions to the Branch, involving the CEO and heads of Compliance and Risk.
Education / Experience / Other Information
  • Experience in Wholesale Operations and/or financial reporting, ideally within a wholesale banking environment.
  • Experience with leading and managing small team (
5 employees). * Experience with intercompany or external outsourcing arrangements.
  • Strong communication, and interpersonal skills; demonstrates ability to influence and negotiate with both internal and external stakeholders; proven ability to build strong, cohesive partnerships with the business, operations, technology and other key stakeholders and work effectively in a matrix organization.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, particularly in business analysis and process improvement.
  • Self-driven with proven track record to deliver on initiatives within established timelines; strong ability to effectively prioritize multiple initiatives, projects and work streams simultaneously.
  • Demonstrates strong sense of ownership of tasks and ability to see assignments completed from end-to end.
  • University bachelor's degree or college diploma recipient in a relevant field of study and/or with post-graduate work experience relevant to the role.
  • Australian citizen, permanent resident or long-term visa holder or visa-eligible.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft systems: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of banking systems: BankMaster, Loan IQ (preferred but not required)
