The Lived Experience Workforce (LEW) operates across Mental Health and Specialised Services (MHSS) and is dedicated to ensuring West Moreton Health supports consumers and carers to actively participate in their recovery journey. The LEW assists with providing a recovery orientated and consumer focused service that values the lived experience of both consumers and carers.

• Temporary Full-time opportunity for up to 4 months

About the role

Under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. There is a genuine occupational requirement of this positions to have a lived experience in supporting someone with or with a history of mental illness and recovery.

A Senior Peer Coordinator works to facilitate the delivery, development, and planning of support services to consumers of the mental health service. They promote and provide guidance to the development and ongoing management of consumer participation and provide systems advocacy in relation to consumer, carer, and family related issues.

A Senior Peer Coordinator uses their personal experience mental health or alcohol and other drugs recovery to support patients through positive role modelling, education, facilitating self-advocacy and providing information and opportunities to encourage participation in the public mental health system. 

WMMHSS acknowledges the nature of peer work often involves the sharing of personal lived experience in a way that is unique and may have dual relationships with the consumers, carers, and services they work for may be common, therefore WMMHSS recognises the importance of the peer worker being offered reasonable adjustments as needed.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to provide consumer focused advocacy and support for consumers that maintains a balance between the clinical and therapeutic needs of consumers and their constitutional and common law rights as citizens
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to convey consumer's needs to key stakeholders including service managers and clinical service providers
  • Demonstrated experience in proactively identifying areas and making recommendations for improvements to mental health service planning, delivery and evaluation from the perspective of mental health consumers to ensure services are consumer focused and recovery orientated

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO. 01/16 (PDF) ( https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/150120/hed-0116.pdf )
  • A personal lived experience of mental illness and recovery and ability to advocate for and support people experiencing mental illness.
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health or equivalent would be highly regarded
