The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is the peak advocacy body representing the interests of local government at a national level. As a federation of state and territory local government associations, ALGA represents the interests of Australia’s 537 councils.
With a vision to be the united, strong voice for Australian local government, ALGA aims to achieve this by providing advice and advocacy services to its member associations and, through them, local councils throughout Australia.
About the role:
ALGA is seeking new Senior Policy Advisers to join the organisation and promote the interests of local government across a range of high priority areas.
Senior Policy Advisers report directly to ALGA’s Executive Director – Policy and as senior members of the policy team are responsible for developing, articulating, and communicating ALGA’s policy positions to shape and influence public policy and funding outcomes for local governments at the national level.
Senior Policy Advisers are responsible for leading policy development, analysis, and engagement across one or more of ALGA’s policy priorities. This includes:
- Infrastructure
- Roads and transport
- Environment
- Climate change and emissions reduction
- Energy
- Housing and planning
- Jobs, skills, and training
Successful candidate:
ALGA is seeking highly motivated policy professionals to contribute to ALGA’s policy development. The successful candidates will have demonstrable experience developing policy positions in a government department, statutory authority, peak body or equivalent. ALGA is seeking candidates with a background in one or multiple of:
- Economics
- Public policy
- Infrastructure
- Roads and transport
- Environment
- Climate change and emissions reduction
- Energy
- Housing and planning
- Jobs, skills, and training
This may include relevant tertiary qualifications.
An understanding of the Australian political system, federal public service and policy processes is required, as is experience in monitoring policy changes and trends and identifying opportunities to influence policy.
The successful candidates will have experience developing policy and responding to government processes. They will have strong analytical and communication skills. Experience attending high level meetings Ministerial and Senior Officials meetings will be highly regarded.
